EAST NEWPORT V HORSPATH

Report: Gilbert Davis

East Newport Cycle Speedway Club rounded of a very busy South & South Wales season on Sunday 31st October at home to Horspath. Division one, Combination & Conference.

With the East Enders needing a big favour from Southampton to win at home to current league leaders Poole a home victory was essential against this season Premier League Champions Horspath Hammers to stand any slim chance of winning the division one title.

Both sides looked evenly matched on paper and at the half way stage the scores were level 45 - 45. After a good half time team talk the East Newport eight set their sights on the all important 2 league points and banged in 6 heat advantage's in the final 9 races to run out 94 - 84 winners.

Captain & Man Of The Match "Neil Power" recorded his 2nd maximum of the season was backed up very well by "Louis Harvey" who also went unbeaten in his five rides, & "Matt Davis"

Scores East Newport
Neil Power 20, Matt Davis 10
Louis Harvey 19+1, Dan Bock10
Corey B Jones 6, Aaron Hughes 12
Simon Bendon 2, Nicky Evans 15+1

Next up was the Combination encounter & with the East Enders already crowned Champions in this division it was time to give some of our up and coming youngsters a run out.

Even though the score line of 28 - 51 in favour of the away side the East End six gave it there all against a rampant Hammers side.

Scores East Newport
Colin Wildy 9, Khaild Mitha 6+1
Callum Goward 2, Ieuan Payne 4
Adam Bennett 2, Tudor Coombes 5

Next & final action on this cold October day was Conference league for riders under the age of 18.

Once again a win was a must for the East Enders to possibly finish in the runners up spot of this division.

The side without regular Conference rider Josh Davis due to him taking a nasty fall at Poole the previous weekend where he sustained a chipped bone to his right wrist still went about the business of gaining the two league points on offer.

Two paid maximums from Aaron Hughes & Louis Harvey 18+2 each & 16 from Corey B Jones 15+1 from Dan Bock, Khaild Mitha 4, Sean Bennett 4, Callum Gaward 5, Ieuan Payne dnr secured a 10 point victory 80 - 70 to the Dragons.

Next action at the Polo will be Saturday 6th November 12 noon where all Club riders young & not so young will be taking part in the 2010 Club Championship a great day of racing is sure to be had so pop down to Larch Grove Playing Fields Underwood NP18 2HB, its Free.

15TH LONDON OLD MASTERS

Event: Saturday 30th October 2010, East London CSC | Report: Stephen Harvie

Wednesfield's pocket dynamo Mark Griffiths produced five perfect starts to record a debut maximum at the 15th running of the London Old Masters on a fine autumnal Saturday in the Olympic city. The Eurovets GP Series runner-up and British Vets podium finalist from the West Midlands' only tricky race was when he came up against last year's victor Gary Brown and local favourite Dennis Hubble in heat 14. However Griffiths dispatched with Brown and multi rostrum visitor Norman Venson on his way to the title. These two former winners tied on 18 points but a shattered Dennis declined a run-off in favour of the Suffolk rider who gained most of his points from determined overtaking manoeuvres on the damp but grippy surface. Norman finished fourth ahead of Hull's Simon Plows who scored well on an unknown track to him including a dead heat for 2nd place with former winner Dave Tulloch behind Gary Brown in heat 11 the best race of the day.

Despite containing six riders over 60yrs, the racing was as competitive as in their heyday with high speed tumbles for both Tulloch and ex Hawbush rider Chris Riches in a match well controlled by referee Dave Hunting. Steve Woodroof equalled his 6th position of last year, half a point ahead of Tulloch with 2005 winner Les Stevens a further half point adrift. Eurovets organiser Fred Rothwell was the best of the rest ahead of former British Lions Manager Dave Baxter continuing a season long rivalry with Kevin Smith a point adrift. Usual LOM referee Dave Hughes scored nine points but was in positions in a couple of races to add to that.

The remaining riders enjoyed their meeting with that fall costing Riches a couple of places whilst 72 year old legend, Chic Mackie after driving through the night from Glasgow, claimed positional victories over last minute entry Tony Johnstone and Bury's Steve Jarman and was contemplating driving to Edinburgh straight afterwards to compete in Sunday's Scottish Open at Redbraes Park!

As usual the match was watched by many retired SE riders including former winners Bill Hopkins, Steve Bloxham, Dave Palfreyman and Lee Galley amongst the Cycle Speedway faces hanging over the safety fence. For a second year the trophies were sponsored by Dutchman Johan Koudijs who presented them along with Almere / Hilversum compatriots Donald Reiche and Fred van-den Dolder and the majority of the field partook of some refreshments at the nearby Fox at Connaught Docklands bistro afterwards.

With even more veterans racing events planned for next year the LOM will probably be re-incorporated in a Eurovets round to be held earlier in the season now that long term organiser Steve (Jock) Harvie has finally hung up his wheels for good.

Result - 1st. MARK GRIFFITHS (Wednesfield) 20 Points, 2nd. Gary Brown (Kesgrave) 18, 3rd. Dennis Hubble (East London) 18, 4th. Norman Venson (Leicester) 17, 5th. Simon Plows (Hull) 16.5, 6th. LEICESTER V POOLE

Report: Tim Jarvis | Images: Magdalena Nowacki

It took Leicester until heat five to take a decisive advantage in this match, successive 7-3's from Peck/Burns and Nowacki/Jarvis putting Poole on the back foot, and it all looked to be going the home sides way when Leicester fired in two more maximums either side of the interval to take a sixteen point lead.

Heat fourteen saw Poole claw back a 7-2 after Marchant and Yelland collided whilst challenging Gavin Wheeler, Yelland hitting the fence and being unable to finish the race. The very next heat Newey dropped his chain and although unbeaten reserve Burns held off a hard charging Morgan the lead was now down to eight points.

The Monarchs then regained composure with a couple of 6-4's to round off proceedings, including the pass of the season by Nowacki who went around Wheeler at a speed that most riders would have found themselves looking very closely at the safety fence!

Wheeler, Colling and Reed were top men for Poole but Morgan and Hearn both posed lots of problems and are sure bets to be very good PL riders for Poole in the coming years.

Nowacki and Burns didn't drop any points to the opposition whilst Newey just didn't have the luck today, all in all a good solid home performance.

Leicester 95 (L Nowacki 18+2, A Peck 14, J Ashford 12+2, C Marchant 12, C Jarvis 11, K Burns 11+1, M Newey 10, L Yelland 7+3)

Poole 83 (G Wheeler 17, T Reed 16+2, T Colling 14, S Hearn 10, A Morgan 8, L Glover 7, L Armes 6+1, W Bristow 5+1)

The combination was a tight affair on the track but with Poole conceding 36 penalty points the result was never in doubt.

Leicester 34+36 = 70 (M Skinner 12+1, N Venson 11+2, C Cooper 10+1, M Hartshorn 10+1, A Doughty 10+1, Liam Davies 8+2, L Woods 2, M Barrett 1)

Poole 65 (A Morgan 16, S Hearn 15+1, L glover 10, W Bristow 10, L Armes 7, A lane 7+1)

Lukas Nowacki snatched the match race championship with a on the line verdict after Tom Colling had led for the whole race, referee Bob Prince indicating the margin to be less than half a wheel!
