HORSPATH HAMMERS SEAL 6TH PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE

Horspath v Sheffield, British Premier League - 10th Oct - The Village Horspath | Report: Geoff Gamage

With Sheffield missing the likes of Jono Birks and any of their Polish riders and Horspath looking for the win to seal their 6th BPL crown it was always going to be an uphill battle for the visitors, who put up a brave spirited performance and were well served by British No 2 Andy Angel who was superb being unbeaten by an opponent. Matt Smith had the race of the day brilliantly holding off both a charging Steve Harris and Mark Boaler in the final race, a fitting end to a great season's Premier League racing at the Village. Ryan Hyland tried hard to support Angel but generally the Hammers had it their own way.

After Angel had passed Lewis Osborne in the opening race Hammers then banged in two 7-3s via Carmichael / Harris and Szymczak / Boaler, Sheffield themselves got a 7-3 in the 4th from Hyland / Angel. Szymczak / Boaler then replied with a 7-3 in the 6th. The Osborne's grabbed a 6-4 next race and another 7-3 from Harris / Carmichael in the 8th followed by a third Angel win, leaving a 14 point gap at the halfway point.

Two 7-3s opened the second period, courtesy of Osborne / Boaler and Harris / Carmichael. After four restarts Heat 13 saw Sheffield take advantage of a Boaler exclusion with an Angel / Hyland 6-3, Carmicheal / Rudman 6-4 in 14 and Szymczak / Payne 6-4 in 16 preceeded Carmicheal completing an unbeaten afternoon with a 7-0 with Lewis Osborne following two Stars exclusions. In between Andy Angel completed his maximum too. Then the last race served up four laps of action as the quick starting Matt Smith held of both Harris and Boaler.

BIRMINGHAM V WEDNESFIELD

Report: Mark Winwood

Birmingham were eager to bounce back from the defeat at the hands of the league champions Horspath last weekend and started heat one with a steady 5-5 draw. As you would expect with a local derby it was fiercely contested with no quarter given and plenty of incidents.

The first talking point was heat 2 when Wednesfield gained a 7-0 over the home side after Dominick Rycharski was excluded after a fine pass on Lee Aris, only to loss his pedals and come down heavy causing a stoppage. The heat was re-run with Ben Mould producing a power gate from Grid 2 clearing Scott Doherty, however this move allowed Lee Aris to bomb up the inside, both riders met on the bottom bend with Ben hitting the deck and picking up exclusion for the stoppage.

Wednesfield extended their lead in Heat 3 after Chris Timms was excluded for excessively slowing the race, gifting the visitors a 6-4 advantage over the lone figure of Paul Heard in the re-run.

Birmingham fought back in Heat 4 with a fine piece of team riding. Marcus Wadhams gated down Matt Baharrel whilst Nathan Groves took care of Roger Cox. On the first lapped Nathan was encouraged to the front, and there he stayed. Wadhams rode the rest of the race as his protector for a fine 7-3 heat advantage.

Heat 5 saw a heavy and nasty looking fall for Mark Winwood whilst challenging Chris Jewkes for the front spot. Winwood landed in the path of his team mate Errol Thaw at speed, Thaw did well to miss Winwood but in doing so allowed Wednesfield's Luke Draisey through for Wednesfield to claim another 7-3 advantage.

Heat 6 saw the usual battle between Aris and Timms with Aris getting the better of his opponent on his occasion. Heat 7 Wadhams quickly snapped up another heat win, with Terry Norman chasing hard and the evergreen Mark Griffith getting better of Errol Thaw. It was a great race with the heat points shared.

In Heat 8 Birmingham staged a fight-back taking their second 7-3 advantage thanks to a strong gate from Rycharski and an excellent bit of team riding by Ben Mould who successfully regulated Chris Jewkes despite a great deal of pressure from the Wednesfield's Mr Reliable.

Heat 9 was a shared heat after Aris picked up exclusion and the teams broke for the interval. At the half way stage after 9 pretty stern heats it was Birmingham 39 Wednesfield 46.

Wednesfield responded after the break with a 6-4 advantage after Scott Doherty caught Winwood knapping at the same time causing enough problems to allow Draisey through for the win despite lots of pressure from Timms.

Heats 11 & 12 were shared heats. Birmingham then produced a good 7-3 in Heat 13 after Draisey and Jewkes appeared to get in each other's way on the first bend allowing Heard and Timms a clear road ahead. The points were now getting tight with Birmingham 60 Wednesfield 64.

In Heat 14 Mark Griffiths picked up a tape exclusion allowing Birmingham to take a 6-4.

Heat 15 was a 5-5 and Wednesfield stamped their authority on the match in Heat 16 which was the second talking point. Wednesfield notched their third 7-3 of the afternoon. Errol Thaw appeared to be sandwiched between Terry Norman and Matt Baharrel, however the referee saw nothing wrong with the incident. Thaw remonstrated with the official and picked up a Yellow Card for his efforts.

Birmingham finished strongly with their own 7-3 in the final heat but it was too late. Final Score Birmingham 86 Wednesfield 87. All in all a cracking match, with load cheers and handshakes all round following the final whistle.

Birmingham 86: Marcus Wadhams 15, Errol Thaw 7, Ben Mould 15, Dominik Rycharski 13, Paul Heard 12, Chris Timms 10, Nathan Groves 8, Mark Winwood 6

Wednesfield 87: Roger Cox 2, Chris Jewkes 10, Lee Aris 12, Scott Doherty 13, Mark Griffiths 6, Terry Norman 15, Matt Baharrel 15, Luke Draisey 14

DIVISION 2

Birmingham v Wednesfield Division 2 match was again keenly contested. With Five heats ending in a share of the points and only one 7-3 throughout the entire match, which went to Wednesfield after a gate exclusion to Carl Winwood, the points were always close.

Maximums from both Peter Bourgour and Paul Timms secured the league points for Birmingham. While Wednesfield main threat came from Tony Deleon.

Birmingham 66: Pete Bourgour 16, Phil Widdas 4, Mark Fletcher 4, Paul Timms 16, Andy James 10, Carl Winwood 8, Natalie Timms 6, Billy Winwood 2

Wednesfield 62: Tony Deleon 12, Harry Everest 12, Mick Aris 9, Mikey Bassett 14, Matt Turley 7, Charlie Ellitts 8.

LEICESTER V NORWICH

Report: Tim Jarvis

A massive victory for Leicester, however, the meeting started off in fine fashion, Adam Stephenson had jetted off into the distance in heat one but partner Craig Marchant found himself at the back, some determined riding saw him overhaul Lee Grange but he couldn't catch Richard Hunt, 6-4 to Leicester.

The next two heats saw consecutive 7-3's from Peck/Newey and Nowacki/Burns and the Stars were very much on the back foot, although Lee Grange did win heat five, unfortunately this was to be the only time a Norwich rider crossed the line first.

Heat nine saw the visitors gain the first of two heat advantages, Lukasz Nowacki moving at the gate, his partner Carl Jarvis riding a stormer from gate four to take the win. Heat seventeen, and Leon Yelland took a heavy fall, injuring his knee and being unable to complete the four laps, Mark Newey took the win but the minor places for Leigh Cossey and Ian Grange saw the Stars claw back a point. The meeting was finished off in style by Lukasz Nowacki, who had earlier been presented with the rider of the year trophy, and his partner Adam Peck, who went onto defeat Ian Grange for the match race title.

Norwich were never really able to trouble the home riders on a consistent basis, apart from that sole victory for Lee Grange there was very little to warm the hearts of a visiting supporter, although Phil Adams probably deserved more points, being well in the mix but being passed on a couple of occasions.

Leicester on the other hand had one of their riders over the line first in seventeen heats, reflected by the fact that both Newey and Peck notched paid maximums whilst Stephenson and Jarvis dropped just one point each to an opponent. Nowacki was his normal immaculate self, save for his exclusion of course!

Results - Premier League

Leicester 114 (A Peck 19+1, A Stephenson 19, M Newey 18+2, L Nowacki 15+1, K Burns 13+3, C Marchant 12+2, C Jarvis 9+2, L Yelland 9+1)

Norwich 61 (L Grange 11, L Cossey 10, P Adams 9, J Colby 7+1, R Hunt 7, I Grange 6+1, B Collins 6, G Colby 5)

Norwich were giving away thirteen points in the combination match and despite sterling performances from Josh Colby, Gary Colby and Daniella Riley couldn't claw back the points. Stormin' Norman Venson led the way with thirteen year old Charlie Cooper catching the eye with two wins and a third. Both Matt Hartshorn and Ash Doughty looked good but suffered exclusions restricting their score.

Results - Combination

Leicester 62+13 = 75 ( N Venson 15, C Cooper 10, N Whitehead 10, M Hartshorn 10, A Doughty 7, M Whitehead 5, Lucy Whitehead 4, Luke Whitehead 1)

POOLE 101 SOUTHAMPTON 77

10th October 2010, Harbourside, Poole | Report: Graham Sutton | Image: John Burge

Harbourside Park basked in unseasonably warm sunshine for this South Coast derby encounter. With Gavin Wheeler still on the injured list and Colin Wheeler and Rob Haywood unavailable, the Saints tracked a very young team for this local derby encounter and Poole rested a number of their first choice riders to even out the procedings. In the early heats it looked like the decision had backfired on the home side with just a single point between the teams. However, three faultless rides from Arron Morgan helped Poole to build up a lead of 7 points by the interval.

After the break the home side settled down and extended their advantage with race wins for Harry Boucher, Jake Williams and skipper Chris Shylock before before Tom Colling stopped the rot with a Saints 7-3 along with team partner Dan Miller. Poole responded with two more maximum heat wins of their own to secure the league points which keeps them at the top of the table and in the driving seat for the defence of their SW title. This was a good competitive local derby raced in a excellent spirit before an appreciative crowd
