Leicester v Wednesfield
23rd May 2010, Frog Island, Leicester | Report: Tim Jarvis
The Aces got off to a dream start in this one, taking full advantage after Nowacki moved from grid two and netting a 7-2. The visitors further extended their lead with a well taken 6-4 from Norman and Doherty in heat three only for Jarvis and Burns to take a 7-3 in the next heat to reduce the deficit to three points. As if to emphasise the closeness of the match, this was to be the only 7-3 all afternoon.
A further 6-4 from Pike and Newey over Jewkes and Smith in heat eight left the gap at just a single point, however the Aces entered the interval three up.
Leicester began in determined mood after the break with Pike and Newey taking a 6-3 over Doherty and Norman who failed to finish the race. Worse was to come for the visitors in heat fourteen with leader Doherty excluded for slowing the race, a decision not appreciated by the Wednesfield side of the pits.
Leicester entered heat seventeen seven points up but looked up against it with Aris and Norman off the inside gates, however Newey made a storming start from two getting in the way of Aris sufficiently to allow Jarvis through whose speed down the back straight also carried him past Norman to earn a most unlikely win and a share of the points.
The final heat required a 7-0 to Wednesfield for a draw, Marchant was then excluded by referee Bob Prince leaving Pike alone on borrowed machinery, however the lone Monarch finished off a good afternoon by taking second place, thus ensuring the match win.
Apart from his exclusion Nowacki was majestic and never looked troubled, he received good back up from Pike, Newey and Jarvis whilst it was good to see Adam Peck looking more like his old self. Marchant sandwiched a couple of wins into a mixed afternoon and skipper Burns contributed well from reserve. Brookes found himself on outside grids but rode far better than his score suggests.
The Aces problem was lack of race winners, just five, which shows how well the team rode for the minor places. Unusually, Lee Aris could only win his first race and Griffiths, Doherty and Norman could only go past the post first on one occasion between them. The two riders who really caught the eye though were super reserves Beharell and Radcliffe who gave 100% in every race and look inspired signings by the Aces management.

A hard fought match with a mixture of youth and experience. I'm not sure the riders on show today think that the combination league is such a bad idea!!!
