Stocksbridge School warm-up event
Five Stocksbridge School, just outside Sheffield, pupils attended the second Sports Unlimited funded session at Sheffield Cookson Park in preparation for the upcoming School Championship event. After a couple of dry days the temporary grass circuit was considerably faster than the previous week. Jamie Lamb was in top form and was very impressive in winning all four of his races, managing to get the bike at some impossibly low angles when cornering. The other race win came from newcomer Charlie Nield who made good passes on Chris Leadbeater and Oliver Smith in the first heat. The other debutant was Ben Lyons who managed a second place in his seven point tally.
SCORERS: Jamie Lamb 16, Charlie Nield 12, Oliver Smith 8, Ben Lyons 7, Chris Leadbeater 6.
Crookes Gentlemans Cycling Club Match Report
Sheffield Cycle Speedway Club continued to look at ways of expanding the Cycle Speedway profile by opening the Cookson Park facilities for the use of the Crookes Gentlemans Cycling Club. Cyclists more used to Road, Track and MTB had a ball on a dusty circuit that would have proved difficult to race for seasoned Cycle Speedway riders. Using the 16 rider individual formula the club had qualifying races and then grand finals. All of the competitors quick on the straights but the cornering technique was proving difficult to master.
Outstanding performance came from Nick Hamilton, who recorded three smart wins and was only beaten by Cookson’s number One junior rider Jamie Langton (making up the numbers while assisting coach Rob Mawhood in running the session as part of his BC junior volunteer role). There was some close and exciting racing and a few spills were unavoidable, luckily only Rob Snowden needed the first aid when suffering from a deep cut to his knee in his first outing, Rob would later go on to claim first place in the D Final.
Chris Palmer and Alec Hartley both recorded two wins apiece, Alec also suffering a fall that meant he missed the A Final. Consistent riding from Simon Chopin (one win, three second places) saw him get a place in the A Final. There were also race wins for Dave James, John Alexander (who consistently came from last place to pick up points), Jack Chopin and Henry Norman. A special mention for Stewart Marshford and Kieron Kinninmont who both had to get their 6’ 8” frames onto bikes not especially designed for them. Kieron in particular was very quick from the start and on the straights but was giving away ground on the corners. Jodie Vallance, as the only female, was worried about being lapped. She need not have been as she got a good third place and was constantly challenging her male counterparts.
QUALIFYING SCORES.
Jamie Langton 16, Nick Hamilton 15, Chris Palmer 14, Simon Chopin 13, Jack Chopin 12, Henry Norman 12, Alec Hartley 11, Dave James 11, John Alexander 10, Leon Foster 8, Stewart Marshford 8, Adam Wiles 7, Martin Baker 6, Rob Snowden 6, Kieron Kinninmont 5, Jodie Vallance 5.

The group have promised to return again later in the year and some are even mulling over the prospect of returning for the first Hallamshire Go Ride League this Sunday, 23rd May.
North West Go Race Grand Prix Round 2
Report: Mike Hack
Astley & Tyldesley hosted Round 2 of the North West Go-Race Grand Prix series at Gin Pit on Sunday. A handicapping system was put into place to even up the differences in age, ability and experience of the competitors. Joel Partington made light of his 20 yards handicap in each race, coming through the field each time to win all four of his races and win the round with a 16 points maximum score. Young Adam Turnbull turned in a tenacious display, to take 2nd place overall after scoring 14 points, with Luke Jamson and Stefan Whitelegg tieing for 3rd place, after both had scored 13 points.

South & South Wales Division One Roundup
Report: Graham Sutton
There were close results at all four venues in what is proving to be a highly competitive season of league racing in the South West.
East Newport became the first club to lower the colours of top of the table Poole at Larch Grove in a very even match-up. Meanwhile at Winchester Road, the Saints were left to reflect on costly tapes exclusions for Gav Wheeler and Tom Colling which allowed Eastbourne based Hellingly to plunder the points in a shock away win with the ever reliable Hollebon brothers providing a potent twin spearhead.
Newport looked determined to underline their title credentials at Cofton Road as they held an interval lead of 3 points but their advantage had been narrowed to a single point after 13 races. Then an inspiring 7 - 3 from Aaron Herbert and spritely vet Andy Collett relieved pressure on the hosts as Exeter stretched their lead to 5 points. Top duo Dom McCrae and Thomas Reed wrapped it all up with another 7 - 3 in the penultimate heat.
There was an equally close encounter in the M4 derby at the Oasis where the inclusion of Ian Lawrence for Oxford visitors Horspath swung the advantage fractionally in their favour.

Wednesfield v Sandwell
Report: Roger Beaman
Sunday 16th May
Sandwell Lions fail to hold the Wednesfield Aces in this Midland League match. The Lions took the lead in the first heat when Matt Turley was excluded for moving at the tapes, so they had a one point lead which they kept in the second. This heat was one of the best of the afternoon, seeing Tom Haddock and Scott Doherty in a four lap battle for second place, which was won by the Aces rider.
It was not until heat heat six that Wednesfield took a lead which they kept until the last heat, slowly increasing their hold in the second half of match until they won by 94 points to 80.
Matt Smith was the meetings top scorer with 19 points his only defeat coming in the first heat to Chris Jewkes. The match saw several exclusions with Lee Smith and Peter Clark both going back to the pits for moving at the tapes, and Jamie Ball's chain coming off whilst in a good position in heat 15.
Result
Sandwell 80: Matt Smith 19, Scott Millward 17, Tom Haddock 11, Lee Smith 10, Jamie Ball 9, David Ball 8+1, Jim Palmer 7+2, Peter Clark 4.
Wednesfield 94: Chris Jewkes 18, Mark Griffiths 17+1, Scott Doherty 15+2, Sam Smith 14+1, Roger Cox 11+1, Tony De Leon 9, Matt Turley 6, Mick Aris 4+1.
The Second Division match was marred by the accident in heat three which resulted in young Reanna Brindley being taken to hospital for a spinal examination, everyone at Sandwell wish her well.
Scott Millward, Matt Smith, Matt Haddock and Jim Palmer carried on as they had done the day before all top scoring for Sandwell, with Charlie Ellitts, Mikey Bassi and John Russell being the best for the young Aces side.
One rider to catch the eye was newcomer Adam Rowley riding in his first ever match, he found out where the safety fence was in the pre-match warm-up, and just missed it several times in the match.
Result
Sandwell II: 76-5: Matt Haddock 19, Jim Palmer 15+1, Josh Hill 15, Scott Millward 14+2, Peter Clark 9, Adam Rowley 4
Wednesfield II: 54: Charlie Ellitts 13+1, Mikey Bassi 12+1, John Russell 10, Harry Everiss, 7+2, James Harrimann 7+1, Courtney Aris 5.
