Bike Week (16-24 June), the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, is this year aiming to build on the success of ‘Britain’s Biggest Bike Fix’ in 2011 and reach its ambitious target of fixing over 50,000 bikes across the UK in two years.

Last year, Bike Week helped repair 26,000 bikes. Getting bikes out of the shed and back on the road is helping encourage more people than ever to get cycling in the UK. Bike Week hopes to capitalise on the interest in cycling in advance of the summer to encourage even more people to hop on their bikes.

Phillip Darnton, Bicycle Association says: “Britain’s Biggest Bike Fix proved a phenomenal success last year and we’re determined to make this year’s activity even more successful for everyone – regular cyclist and the thousands who have a bike in their shed which just needs making road worthy. There are bike fix events across the UK, so find one near you and make the most out of the expertise on offer. If you run a cycle shop, do get involved in a local event – it’s a great way to meet new customers and raise your profile.”

Chris Compton of Compton Cycles says: “Last year’s Bike Week sparked new interest in digging old bikes out from sheds and getting them roadworthy again and helped me as an independent business get face to face contact with potential new customers. We’re predicting a boost in interest for bike repairs this year and look forward to helping Bike Week reach its ambitious target.”

The cycle industry has backed Bike Week since 2004.

Britain’s Biggest Bike Fix is a highlight in this year’s Summer of Cycling, a multi-stakeholder campaign to encourage a massive cycling renaissance in the UK.
