Olympic, world and British BMX champion Beth Shriever kicks off her 2022 in Manchester this weekend at the first and second rounds of the National BMX Series in Manchester, as the team step up their preparations for the UCI BMX Racing World Cup in Glasgow from 28-29 May.
Shriever followed up her historic Olympic title in Tokyo by winning the rainbow jersey in Papendal and the British championships in Leicester last August, taking all three crowns in the space of just 31 days.
Reflecting on a life-changing 2021, she said:
“Last year was a massive, massive year for me, and it’s been a whirlwind of a few months since. I’ve loved every second of it. Leading into the Games and the worlds I was enjoying my training and just having a good time, but not once did I ever think I was going to bring back a medal or win. To have that much success was just totally unexpected.
“With that success comes a bigger profile, but I’m still me, I’m still enjoying every second of being a full-time athlete, going to all of these amazing races and travelling the world. Being here with the boys and training with them, nothing really changes.”
Having crashed out in the semi-finals during the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow, Beth has unfinished business and will be looking to set the record straight in Glasgow this time around.
Tickets for the event are now on general sale, with prices starting from just £10.
Looking ahead to Glasgow, she added:
“It’s not often that we get a home World Cup. If you’ve never seen all these fast elite riders from all around the world, this is the place to be. You won’t see guys and girls going any quicker than we will be on that weekend.
“It’s so different to anything else. It’s full of speed, you can support your riders, and it’s definitely very special seeing more young girls and women getting involved.”
Spectators are welcome at this weekend’s round of the National BMX Series at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, with weekend wristbands available to purchase at the main reception for £8, while there is no charge for those aged under five.
