31 August 2023
August has been a bumper month of cycling, from grassroots events happening as part of the Summer of Cycling initiative, through to the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, and everything else in between! None of these things would happen without volunteers making them happen.
We want to say a huge thank you and well done to all, in particular those individuals nominated for this month's Volunteers: In Focus!
If you think someone deserves a mention, get in touch on social media with your respective regional or national teams or via @BCCoaches on Twitter.
Name: 19 volunteers involved
Region: Scotland
Role: Guided Ride Leaders, Breeze Champions and Community Group volunteers
To celebrate the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships coming to Glasgow and Scotland from 3rd to 13th August a team of Guided Rides and Breeze volunteers from across Scotland organised 28 rides to provide the opportunity for as many people as possible to feel the cycling buzz. Across six different Championship locations, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Peebles, Stirling and Dumfries, the team of ride leaders supported locals and visitors alike on easy-paced, friendly and supportive rides open to everyone, spotlighting what cycling in that championship location has to offer. What a fantastic way to celebrate Scotland delivering such a brilliant first of its kind event on a global stage!
Sincere thanks and well done go to Sabine, Claire, Matteo, Liz, Antje, Alan, Julie, Jen, Katy, Fiona, Jill, Tracy, Beth, Sue, Pauline, Lara, Kirsteen, Fern and Debbie for making this happen and showing many, many people great routes across the country!
British Cycling Values: Passion
Name: Catherine Hickman
Region: Central
Roles: Pedal Party Volunteer, Guided Ride Leader
Community Developer for Cherwell, Heidi Yates, told us the following about Catherine:
“Since meeting with Catherine last year when I came into role and spoke about how we can work together she has been fully on board to help. She was already an active member of her local cycle group - Bicester BUG, a local Guided Ride Leader, and has now been fully invested in working with me on our new project - Pedal Party Bicester.
She has stepped up to help with coaching and taken on the role to help pilot deliver our Youth Development Award without question. It is because of volunteers like Catherine that we can run these kinds of events and I am hugely grateful. Catherine has unwavering passion to want to help. She has bags of enthusiasm and drive to create environments for children and adults to be physically active together.
I am personally grateful to have met Catherine and can't thank her enough for her support and help.”
