The Great Britain Cycling Team has confirmed Matt Holmes has withdrawn from the men’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Imola due to a non-COVID related illness. Ethan Hayter will replace Holmes in Sunday’s race.

Stephen Park, Performance Director, said: “I know Matt is disappointed to miss out on the UCI Road World Championships due to illness, but given the current circumstances neither he nor the team wanted to take any chances and Matt has not travelled to Italy with the rest of the squad. I’d like to thank Matt for his commitment and enthusiasm for joining the team throughout the selection process, and we send him our well wishes.

“Fortunately, we are able to call on Ethan Hayter to take Matt’s place in the elite men’s road race. Ethan will travel back to Italy in strong form having recently taken his first pro victory at the Giro dell'Appenino and we look forward to welcoming him back into Great Britain Cycling Team colours.”
