Johnny McEvoy lorded it in Lincoln as he claimed the 2018 HSBC UK | Spring Cup Series title following a stirring win for Alex Richardson.

McEvoy, who also helped inspire Madison Genesis to victory in the team standings, claimed a series triumph in the Lincoln Grand Prix.

The limelight was also shared by Richardson, who, with a raft of riders finely poised in the penultimate lap, took the bull by the horns and stormed to a superb triumph.

The early picture

The first breakaway of the race formed midway through the opening lap, with Edmund Bradbury, of JLT Condor, Charlie Tanfield, of Canyon Eisberg, and Team Wiggins’ Tom Pidcock stealing a march on the peloton.

They were soon joined by Richardson, as well as Madison Genesis’ Connor Swift, while Holdsworth Bikes’ Damien Shaw and Team Ribble’s John Archibald both made unsuccessful bids to get themselves in the mix.

The breakaway riders continued to tussle for supremacy while the gap between them and the peloton grew ever larger, with the leaders beginning to split during lap four.

ONE Pro Cycling’s Karol Domagalski, the winner of the Chorley Grand Prix – the opening round – then suffered a technical problem, dealing his chances of topping the series standings a major blow.

At the halfway point, Tanfield, Swift, Pidcock, Bradbury and Richardson led the way but the latter pair soon dropped away from the breakaway group, with series leader Johnny McEvoy part of a huge chasing group made up of 38 riders.

Richardson comes to the fore

In lap eight, the complexion of the race changed dramatically as the three leaders were first caught by Madison Genesis’ George Pym, Steve Lampier, of Saint Piran, and a resurgent Domagalski.

The drama wasn’t done there, however, as the leaders were reeled in and more than 20 riders bunched together at the head of matters.

It was anybody’s race but midway through the penultimate lap, the man to haul himself into the ascendancy was Richardson, who pulled clear of the pack.

Richardson still led going into the final lap of the gruelling Lincoln course and continued to extend his advantage before crossing the line first to claim victory.
