Great Britain’s Oliver Wood takes European omnium silver in Greece

Great Britain’s Oliver Wood took a silver medal at the UEC Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships in Athens, Greece with a superb performance in the men’s under-23 omnium.

Just a few days after winning gold in the team pursuit, Wood finished his omnium campaign with 189 points, just six points behind eventual champion Thery Schir of Switzerland.

The 19-year-old Yorkshireman started the day in fourth place after three events but with the second fastest ride of the day in the 1km time-trial in 1:03.734 and a sensational win in the flying lap in 13.198 seconds he went into the final event, the 40km points race in second place, a position that he held over the 160 laps of the Athens velodrome earning him a silver and a place on the podium.

In the women’s under-23 500m time trial, Great Britain’s Katy Marchant took an early lead with a personal best of 34.190 seconds but eventually missed out on a podium spot ending up in fourth place with Russia’s Anastasia Voynova winning in 33.343. Great Britain’s Dannielle Khan finished in another personal best time of 34.991 seconds placing her sixth overall after all 16 riders had finished.

In the men’s junior omnium, Great Britain’s Joe Holt, had started the day in fifth place with 96 points. After finishing seventh in the 1km time trial and fifth in flying lap, he went into the final event, the 25km points race, in fourth position. After amassing seven points over the 10 sprints, Holt eventually finished in ninth place overall.

Day five also heralded the start of both the under-23 and junior women’s omnium races. In the under-23 category, Emily Kay currently sits in fifth place with 94 points, 22 points behind the leader Amalie Dideriksen of Denmark. In the junior category, Grace garner sits in second place, 14 points behind current leader Daria Pikulik of Poland.

The final day of racing in Athens will see medals decided in under-23 women’s omnium, under-23 men’s keirin, under-23 women’s keirin, under-23 men’s Madison, junior men’s Madison, junior men’s keirin, junior women’s keirin and the junior women’s omnium.
