The success of Great Britain Cycling Team’s para-cycling squad and Yorkshire’s unforgettable hosting of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart have been catalysts for a clear uptake in cycling opportunities for all.

British Cycling is fully committed to increasing access to the sport through the development of cycling facilities. Further contributing to a national network, British Cycling today announced the launch of a new disability cycling hub in York which will host para-cycling coaching sessions delivered at the dedicated closed road circuit at York Sport Village.

The closed road circuit is part of a complex that was joint funded by British Cycling and York University to ensure that the Tour de France legacy lives on in Yorkshire and Humberside.

Para-cycling sessions will take place monthly beginning on Sunday 12 April from 11:30am to 1pm and will be led by British Cycling-qualified coaches from local Go-Ride club Clifton CC, with the support of British Cycling and York Sport Cycling.

British Cycling regional development manager for Yorkshire, Peter Root, said: “Having a purpose built closed road circuit and velodrome in York is a fantastic legacy from the Tour de France and the launch of this disability cycling hub is a great example of the growing number of opportunities for people with disabilities to develop their skills, fitness and confidence with the Go-Ride programme.”

The sessions cost just £4, with groups typically focusing on enhancing their bike handling skills and technical exercises. Para-cycling coaching provides a fun and safe environment for people with a disability to experience cycling and celebrate participation in this hugely popular sport.

Regardless of ability, there is something for everyone from initial taster sessions through to competitive racing. Adapted equipment will also be available for use on-site such as a racing trike, tandem and recumbent cycles.
