Alex Beldon managed to cling on to the win in the third round of the Junior Men’s National Road Series at the Cadence Road Race in Brecon, joining a star-studded list of previous winners.

The race once again saw a strong field packed with many of the country’s top junior riders roll out over the 15km Three Cocks Circuit. The rider completed the 108km course over seven laps, finishing up the summit of the dramatic Dderw Pitch.

Cai Curtis-Roberts (Flanders Color Defever Team) made the first significant move of the day, powering away from the peloton in the first lap to gain a 30 second lead before being reeled back in by the bunch.

In the third lap, George Stephen (BCC Race Team) was able to put in a huge attack and managed to gain one minute and 30 seconds over the bunch. Alex Beldon (MAS Design - Fensham Howes) attempted to chase down Stephen, catching him in the fifth lap as the peloton continued to put in attacks in an attempt to close the gap.

As Stephen dropped off the pace and was caught, Beldon was able to power on solo with a lead of 50 seconds.

Coming into the final lap, Beldon had a one minute 40 second advantage over the bunch as Thomas Mead (Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club) managed his own solo breakaway in an attempt to make the catch. Mead was reabsorbed by the bunch as attacks came thick and fast coming into the final climb.

Beldon managed to hold on to his lead up the Ddwer Pitch and take first place, while his teammate Jed Smithson attacked on the final climb with Elliot Rowe (Anexo Group Race Team).

A sprint finish saw Smithson take second, just 12 seconds behind Beldon, while Rowe had to settle for third on the day, before the bunch fought it out to take the finish.

Ben Marsh (BCC Race Team) is leading the overall standings on 66 points, while Max Bufton (Toufati Everyone Active A) sits in second on 57 points.

The riders will next take to the startline on Sunday 28 May at the MAS Design Yorkshire Classic for round four of the Junior Men's National Road Series.
