Regulation change: Junior gearing

In line with the sport’s international governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), from Sunday 1 January 2023 gear restrictions will be removed for all junior riders in road and circuit races.

Following discussion and approval by the British Cycling Road Commission and Technical Commission, the regulation change was approved by the British Cycling Board earlier this month. While changes to Technical Regulations are typically introduced from March 1st, in this instance the Technical Commission has made the decision to amend the regulation from January 1st to fully align with the UCI.

Adopting the change on this date will prevent riders from needing to make changes to equipment mid-season, and will also remove the requirement for Commissaires and officials to perform junior gear checks at events. No changes have been made to gearing regulations for Youth categories.

Anybody with questions about the change or our wider regulations for the sport can contact our team by emailing road@britishcycling.org.uk or techregs@britishcycling.org.uk.
