In September 2019, for the first time since 1982, the world’s best cyclists came to Yorkshire for the UCI Road World Championships. This major international event included a range of men’s and women’s races, across age groups and will include for the first-time, paracycling. Yorkshire aimed to deliver the most inclusive, innovative and inspiring Road World Championships in the history of the UCI.

Dedicated cycling facilities provide safe, traffic-free environments for any cyclist of any ability to participate, train, compete and - most importantly - have fun whilst riding a bike. And since 2018, British Cycling has been working closely with Sport England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to develop dedicated cycling facilities to provide safe, traffic-free environments which meet local demand, making use of a £15 million investment programme called Places to Ride.

This collaboration was part of the legacy arising from Yorkshire’s hosting of the UCI Road World Championships, when the world’s best cyclists came to race. This major international event included a range of men’s and women’s races, across age groups and included for the first-time, paracycling.

Funding was available to any organisation developing cycling activity in their community and was invested in a wide range of projects from equipment packages to activate local spaces, improvements to existing facilities, through to brand new cycling facilities.

Nearly 200 different awards and grants have now been issued to a wide range of organisations that cover all the cycling disciplines.
