British Cycling’s Breeze Network is this week celebrating its one year anniversary of working in Wales.

Since joining forces last November with Welsh Cycling as part of the SheCycles Wales programme, there have been some notable successes during its first year including:

  • 1503 women taking part in Breeze rides, from complete beginners to seasoned riders
  • 423 Breeze riders organised
  • 107 Breeze champions trained

In addition to these successes, two Breeze champions saw their efforts recognised at the 2015 USN Welsh Cycling Awards with Mary Trenfield and Christine Smith jointly picking up the Volunteer of the Year Award. Mary and Christine were amongst the first Breeze champions trained in Wales, inspiring many women to ride bikes in Newport.

British Cycling’s national operations manager, Jill Puttnam, said:

“The progress of Breeze in Wales is a testament to the Breeze champions who volunteer their time to organise riders and get more women and girls riding their bikes.

"British Cycling has big plans for the Breeze programme and the expansion across Wales has a pivotal role to play.”

Welsh Cycling’s, chief executive officer, Anne Adams-King, added:

“Women’s cycling in Wales is in fantastic health and it is down to programmes such as Breeze.

"The initiative has had a successful first year and I am excited about what the year ahead has in store for the programme and SheCycles Wales."

#WeRide

Earlier this year, British Cycling published a two-year update on their #WeRide strategy which aims to get one million more women riding bikes by 2020.

The update reported that, since the strategy was first launched in March 2013, British Cycling has directly influenced 254,000 more women to cycle, putting the governing body on track to reach their one million target by 2020.

The work done by Breeze and its army of champions has played a huge part in the strategy’s success so far.
