British Cycling chief executive Ian Drake produced an impressive performance to take 32nd position at the 2015 Brompton World Championships in London on Saturday.

The Brompton World Championships is a unique event, restricted to the ubiquitous Brompton folding bike – a 16-inch wheeled bike which folds into an incredibly small package, a common sight on railway station platforms throughout the country.

The event, promoted for the first time as part of Prudential RideLondon cycling festival, attracted a quality field of over 500 of the world’s top folding bike riders, who descended on the criterium circuit around St James’ Park for eight frenetic and frankly bizarre laps of racing.

Drake, a 10-time Three Peaks Cyclo-cross race veteran, bettered his maiden Brompton World Championships performance of 2013, when the 44-year-old from Doncaster finished 36th on a challenging Goodwood Motor Racing circuit.

The flat, wide-open avenues around the royal park clearly suited Drake, who, after a slick Le Mans-style start, produced consistent sub three minute thirty laps, going on to record a time of 27 minutes and 46 seconds and an impressive average speed of 36 kilometres-per-hour.

The race win went to Britain’s Mark Emsley, who stopped the clock on 26 minutes and 45 seconds. Previous winners have included multiple British time trial champion Michael Hutchinson and four-time Vuelta a Espana Roberto Heras.

Afterwards, Drake summed up his Brompton World Championships experience.

“What and amazing event and celebration of everything great about cycling.

“A fantastic atmosphere throughout the day with London free cycle followed by amazing entertainment of the Brompton World Championships, the Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix Pro Women’s Race and the Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix Youth races!

“Great experience again with the Brompton worlds and I'll definitely be back!”
