British Cycling president Bob Howden has been awarded the C A Rhodes Memorial Award by the Yorkshire Cycling Federation in recognition for his services to the sport.

A member of British Cycling’s board since 1998, Howden was elected as President in November following predecessor Brian Cookson’s successful campaign to become UCI President.

He started cycling in 1968, and was a founder member of Wakefield Cycling club and represented West Yorkshire several times during his 24 years in the saddle. He has also organised cycling races for more than 30 years including divisional road championships and the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling.

Speaking about the award Howden said: “I am tremendously honoured and humbled because it’s something that’s voted for by my peers in cycling.

“I have always worked in cycling on a voluntary basis and it’s very flattering for people to think that I deserve such a prestigious award. It’s an extremely exciting time for me at the moment and after being voted in as British Cycling president in November this is the icing on the cake.”

Howden will be presented with the award at the annual Yorkshire Cycling Federation lunch in February. The award was set up in memory of Yorkshire Cycling Federation co-founder Charles Rhodes, following his death in 1961.

Tim Howcroft, from the Yorkshire Cycling Federation said: “The trustees of the Yorkshire Cycling Federation are proud to acknowledge the commitment and competence of this most worthy recipient of the award.”
