Meet Simon Nurse

The April Coach of the Month is Simon Nurse from Cardiff Jif. Simon is part of the coaching team at Jif as well as multiple other roles within cycling.

Simon coaches once a week in the Jif base of Llanishen High School, where there is provision for a range of ages and abilities. The program runs over the summer with coaching twice a week and runs for a whopping 35-40 weeks a year! As a member of the Jif coaching team, Simon plans and delivers sessions across the groups, with different coaches taking leads at different times. The club have developed a structured approach to their coaching and the Whats App group appears to be very busy!

Sport Cardiff Coaching Academy

Simon has been nominated this month not only because of his commitment to Cardiff Jif and the cycling community as a whole, but also his continued commitment to learning. Simon has enrolled in the Sport Cardiff Coaching Academy, where he benefits from a variety of bespoke workshops and peer forums. He also benefits from an allocated Coach Mentor, in this case Welsh Cycling Workforce Officer, Alistair Waldron.

One of Simon’s development goals for 2019 is prepare riders to perform at a national level. A couple of the many attributes of riders who are successful at this level are decision making and resilience. As such Simon is looking at developing this within his coaching sessions, adding decision making under pressure and overload into training sessions.

Development is essential for a coach, think how much the sport has evolved in ten years and now imagine if your coaching practice doesn’t change? Simon’s commitment to CPD demonstrates the importance he and Cardiff Jif are placing on their rider development.

Three top tips to learn from this month are:

  1. Communicate as a coaching team, sharing is caring!
  2. Engage with support around you, e.g. Sport Cardiff
  3. If you are expecting your riders to develop, so should you

Thank you to Simon and Cardiff Jif for sharing their journey with us.

Thank you to Simon Nurse for becoming our Coach of the Month, Simon will automatically be entered for 'Coach of the Year' Award at the Welsh Cycling Annual Awards 2019 later this year.
