Spectacular opening for Track Worlds

Story posted March 15, 2010 | Event Press Release

The scene is set for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships 2010 which begin on the 24th of March at the Ballerup Super Arena (Copenhagen, Denmark). HRH Crown Prince Frederik and Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will both make a speech before singer Julie Bertelsen will entertain the crowds.

The Danish Cycling Federation’s Jesper Worre, who is responsible for the staging of the event says “we do realize that, compared to the latest two UCI World Cups we have staged, the UCI demands are higher for a World Championship. The audience in the Ballerup Super Arena are in for a treat with a lot of world class action over the five days."

As well as the racing to entertain the crowd, singer Julie Bertelsen will be the focal point during the opening ceremony when she will belt out her great hit, Shout, as well as the Danish national anthem. In the opening ceremony, each participating nation is represented by a Danish rider, who has won medals at previous World Championships or Olympic Games, either on the track or on the road.

The opening day, the 24th, will see World class action on the boards of the Ballerup arena with the Women's 500 metre time trial as well as the Women's Individual Pursuit. Day 1 will also see the spectacular Team Sprint take place with Great Britain's superstar, Chris Hoy, likely to be one of the featured riders. In the Men's Points race, Denmark's Daniel Kreutzfeldt has a silver medal from 2009 to defend.

The UCI Track World Championships 2010 in Denmark is part of Bike City Copenhagen, BCC, which HRH and newly elected IOC-member, Crown Prince Frederik is protector for. Copenhagen is the only city in the world which has now been appointed as a Bike City by the UCI and between 2008 and 2011, Copenhagen is host to six major international cycling events.

As well as the Track Cycling World Championships, Denmark is hosting the prestigious World Road Championship 2011. For more information please visit www.bikecitycopenhagen.com
