A sensational solo effort from Karol Domagalski saw him triumph at the Chorley Grand Prix, firing ONE Pro Cycling to success in the opening race of the 2018 HSBC UK | Spring Cup Series.

The 28-year-old emerged at the top of the pile following a fiercely-contested event in Lancashire, coming to the fore on the final lap to blaze a trail to the top of the podium.

Sunday’s race began at breakneck pace, with 16 riders managing to carve out an early advantage of 25 seconds, and before long, the break had extended their lead to more than three minutes.

The gap widens

The relentless pace continued throughout the first lap, with the breakaway group continuing to place a cushion between themselves and the peloton.

A car obstruction temporarily held up the action but once the racing got back in full swing, a hearty group of 21 riders gained an advantage – the chasers eventually caught the group at the front, swelling its numbers to 35.

The peloton were more than four minutes behind when ONE Pro Cycling’s Jake Scott and Jonny McEvoy, of Madison Genesis, stole a march, with seven riders in pursuit.

Scott and McEvoy were eventually reeled in, with a leading group of 13 riders enjoying a cushion of one minute and 14 seconds over the chasers but, as the ferocious pace continued on a challenging course, the former fell away as a new leading group of five formed.

Domagalski tees up victory

Among them were McEvoy and ONE Pro’s Domagalski, who faced stiff competition from a batch of chasers, but, on the final lap, the pair broke clear to tee up a head-to-head battle.

The pair moved 13 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, and then Domagalski began to pull away, eventually crossing the line two minutes and 24 seconds ahead of McEvoy (4:32.30).

McEvoy’s Madison Genesis teammate Richard Handley (4:35.32), a Lancashire native, managed to get the better of ONE Pro’s Peter Williams in a thrilling sprint finish for third place.
