The second edition of the Try a Sportive series took place on Sunday May 4 from the historic Derbyshire town of Belper. Riders explored some of the best roads found within the Amber Valley.

Whilst the Try a Sportive series aims to get new riders into sportives, they don’t shy away from the hills, and riders had to tackle a hard climb straight from the gun, up to the village of Holbrook. From the top the riders descended down to Duffield before beginning the long ascent up to Alport Height. Some could take in and admire the beautiful single track lanes and surrounding countryside; for others it was a matter of getting their heads down and grafting their way to the top. Though once up I hope all riders took in the majestic view over the market town of Wirksworth!

After some quick, or not so quick for some, refuelling at the Alderwasley feed station it was a fast descent to Whatsandwell before the 55km route split from the 34km route, and the steep ascent up and through the picturesque village of Holloway began. Once riders crested this challenge they were greeted with fast rolling roads through Crich, Heage and Horsley before a final climb back up to Holbrook; from there it was almost freewheeling all the way to the finish.

Thanks to all the riders that took part and we hope to see more of you again at future Dark & White Cycling events. Find your rider time here.

Try a Sportive Ride 3 takes place from Foremark Reservoir in the South of Derbyshire on the 12th July. For more information click here
