Event: 29 September 2013

Oban Sportive is the must do charity challenge for 2013. The two testing routes take you through Argyll's breathtaking scenery for the most part on traffic free back roads.

Starting and finishing at the sea port of Oban (which offers plenty of good accommodation and interest for the visitor) the rides promise to test man and machine in the best backdrop in the UK. Expect sea views, lochs (and locks) large and small, highland glens, tough riding and a warm welcome.

Oban Sportive is dedicated to Chris Bell who was killed in an avalanche at Glen Coe earlier this year. He was an irrepressible athlete and key member of the sportive organising committee. He was determined to make this a top quality event with courses challenging enough to give even the strongest riders a real test while not excluding anyone by excessive mileages. We aim to live up to his aspirations.

Oban Sportive is a back country challenge making use, in large part, of Route 78 of the National Cycle Network. Both routes make use of single track roads and you can expect to deal with variable tarmac and cattle grids. That said, a road bike with reasonably robust wheels and tyres is the most suitable type of bike. You can also expect plenty of climbing, steep descents and winding roads. If you accept the challenge you'll be rewarded with some of Argyll's finest landscape.

The event is a collaborative project between North Argyll Cycle Club and Oban Rotary Club and all proceeds will go to local good causes. The event will be fully supported with chip timing, route cards, feed stations, signage, marshalls and a broom wagon on each course. Thanks to sponsors Bell Ingram, for the first hundred entrants a quality wicking T-shirt will be included in the entry price and cotton T -shirts for later entries. Thanks to the support of the other major sponsors MacQueen Bros. and BID4Oban the majority of the entry fees will go directly to the local causes.
