Ride for the 96 is an annual charity cyclo-sportive bike ride in memory of the 96 Liverpool FC fans who lost their lives in the Hillsborough stadium disaster on 15 April 1989.

The ride takes place on the outskirts of Liverpool and is organised in conjunction with British Cycling. The ride is open to anyone to enter and 100% of entrance fees and sponsorship monies will go to charity.

For the 2013 ride, 50% of the funds raised will go to Alder Hey Childrens hospital, 25% will go to Jamie Carraghers 23 Foundation to be allocated to youth projects and charitable causes on Merseyside, and 25% will go to the Steven Gerrard Foundation to be allocated to children’s charitable organisations and projects.

When and where does the ride take place?
The 2013 Ride for the 96 will take place on Sunday 28 April 2013, starting and finishing at Sutton Leisure Centre in St. Helens, with a route that heads north into Lancashire around the top of Ormskirk and back South towards St. Helens.

The registration desk will be open from 8:30am with a start time of 10am.

What distance is the ride?
The 2013 Ride for the 96 covers 96 km.
An additional 96 mile route is being considered for future years.

How to Enter
Two different entry options are available. Standard entry is £32, whilst an optional £96 entry option is available for those that wish to contribute a little more towards the worthy charitable causes.

Ride for the 96 - History
As a lifelong Liverpool FC fan, I have always been deeply saddened by the events of that fateful day, deeply frustrated and angered by the subsequent lies and cover-ups, and deeply touched by the efforts of the bereaved families, survivors and others to fight for the truth to emerge and be widely accepted.

I wanted to do something as a tribute to the 96, and as a cyclist this seemed like an ideal way to mark my respect, and to raise money for worthy causes.

The first ever Ride for the 96 took place in April 2012, and finished at Anfield on Sunday 15th April 2012. I rode my bike from near Norwich, East Anglia to Liverpool, via the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. The total journey was 269 miles, and the ride was completed over 3 days.

I collected sponsorship (via The Community Foundation for Merseyside / The Jamie Caragher 23 Foundation) to raise nearly £5000 for the Hillsborough Family Support Group and the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.
