Ever seen a gorilla at a sportive? 44 year old Ray Glover has. Appropriately enough, Ray’s favourite feedstation fodder is the humble banana. Kit wise, he prefers the ‘just in case’ approach. Very wise Ray...

What do you take with you on a ride? Jelly Babies and cereal bars, 2 drinks bottles, 2 spare tubes, tools, rain jacket, ID, money, kitchen sink!

Why do you ride sportives? To raise money for good causes, ride in different parts of the country and to challenge myself.

What was your last sportive? Prostate Cancer Charity, Tour of Britain 2011 Stoke-on-Trent

What’s your favourite event and why? Cheshire Plains and Peaks Sportive (160K). Great scenery, food stops, friendly organisation and after ride massage with all the proceeds going to charity.

What’s the longest sportive you’ve done? 160K sportive and the 50K round trip as a warm-up/down

What’s your most memorable sportive moment? Finishing my first ever event in the sunshine in the New Forest and hearing the cheers and applause of the spectators.

What’s your worst sportive moment? Taking the wrong road at a junction where someone had removed a sign and doing all the extra miles to get back on route.

When was the last time you walked up a hill? Never have.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you (or you’ve seen) on a sportive? Cannot choose between the rider with a tagalong trailer with his dog in the back and the person riding dressed in a gorilla suit handing out bananas from a shop bike.

How much training do you do before an event? I ride on a regular basis so nothing special, but I always have a couple of days off the bike before an event and try and get a good night’s sleep beforehand.

What’s your top sportive riding tip? Pay attention to the local weather forecasts!

Favourite feed station fodder? Bananas, flapjack and water!
