Preview: Sussex Surrey Scramble
Event: 5th June 2011
Organiser: Wiggle/UK Cycling Events
Event HQ: Brinsbury College, nr Billinghurst
The South Downs and the Surrey Hills are classic cycling territory and on 5th June, UK Cycling Events brings you the Sussex Surrey Scramble as part of the Wiggle Super Series. This sportive is nestled between the North and South Downs in the area known as the ‘Low Weald' and takes in the very best of the quiet roads, stunning scenery including a few climbs when the route occasionally touches the hills of the North / South Downs to add an element of climbing and challenge to the Epic route.
Starting at the easily accessible Brinsbury College campus nr Billinghurst, The Sussex Surrey Scramble can be described as ‘rideable' with well paced testing sections. There are two ride lengths; a 91 mile ‘Epic Route' and a 60 mile ‘Standard Route' to choose from.
This tranquil circuit can be described as lumpy rather than vastly hilly however the 'Epic' route takes in three fair sized hills... the famous and challenging Ducton, St Roches and Haste Hills. These are sensibly spread out, with the first major climb coming after 70km, allowing legs to be well warmed up. The first section of the course in the Low Weald is fast flowing, allowing riders to clock up early miles with ease. The Standard route skips around the three big hills allowing this fast flowing riding to continue throughout the whole 60 mile course.
After the big three hills have been conquered and views enjoyed, riders will enjoy a flattish last 30 km, allowing them to whisk back toward the finish. There is one little kick for both routes about 10 km before the end, allowing riders to use up the last of their energy stores.
The event promises all the sophistication you would expect including: Toilets, electronic timing, well stocked feed stations, parking, event photography, mechanical support, massages, bike wash facilities and most importantly a enjoyable and extremely well marked course!,
In addition, riders will receive a top notch goody bag worth over £12 including a copy of Cycling Active, a water bottle and free energy products and bars.
