Update 16 July - Organiser Bob Howden has been in touch with us with the great news that there are still plenty of entries available for the challenging Ryedale Rumble, one of the very best Sportive events out there. For entries, get along to the event's website http://www.ryedalerumble.co.uk/

The Event

Now in its fifth year of promotion the Ryedale Rumble has established its own niche as a "must try" Sportive. Organised by British Cycling's Yorkshire Region the event aims to showcase some of the very best cycling roads in North Yorkshire. Instead of using the well trodden routes through the Yorkshire Dales the Rumble takes instead to the North York Moors. Familiar to Heartbeat viewers it's a very different landscape with stunning remoteness best viewed in the month of August when the purple heather takes hold of the moors.

For the climbing aficionados the Rumble features the monument climbs of Boltby Bank, Blakey Bank and the infamous Rosedale Chimney Bank. The event however is more than just about climbing hills. As Organiser Bob Howden says "the very best views just happen to be up there". Not to be missed though are sections of the route that take in picture postcard locations such as the Cistercian Abbeys at Byland and Rievaulx.

Last year saw a change in route from the traditional Bransdale loop. The landslip works that closed the road are still in place and rather than placing a risk on the works being completed in time the event will once again use the 2009 route. This again sees the extended Glaisdale loop on the Longer Rumble One route.

The main change for the event this year lies in the actual venue. For the last couple of years the start and finish has been located at the St Martin's Ampleforth Preparatory School at Gilling Castle. This edition moves across the woods to be main campus of Ampleforth College with riders taking in the magnificent view of the Abbey as they climb up to the finish.

A key feature in promoting the event is the pride held by the BC Yorkshire team in the event delivery. This sees three fully signed route options of 48.6, 71.1 and 111 miles with well stocked feed stations supported once again by Science in Sport. Event planning is a partnership with Ryedale District Council and is supported by the Local Tourist Information centre at Malton who can provide a full range of accommodation bookings throughout the area.

The North Yorkshire Moors is a special location and the Organisational team realises a duty of care is needed to preserve the heritage and the support of local people. To maintain this link the event has a rider limit of 700 riders who start in small groups or individually rather than by massed start.

Proceeds from the event are used to support the Region's Youth Talent structure. BC Yorkshire established the White Rose Youth League several years ago and this now draws over 80 youth riders each week to its events. The next phase of support is to fully develop the Yorkshire Youth Team, not only to achieve competitive success but to develop team bonding within the group.
