Despite the weather forecast predicting a return to the depths of winter, sunshine greeted the 60 youth riders to Caird Park. Other than a light shower and cold wind at times, the racing went ahead as scheduled, although there were rumours that there had been a hail storm on the adjacent athletics track, but that’s not unusual for Caird Park Veldorome and its micro climate.

Youth A Boys

In the opening time trial over 800 metres, Stephen Dent (Nevis Cycles RT) laid down the gauntlet with a time inside 60 seconds, a rarity for this event. Lewis Stewart (Glasgow Riderz) was just outside by 6 100ths of a second. Although dominant in road races, Joe Nally (Hardie-Bikes) was having a harder time of it on the track. Stewart followed up his TT result by taking top slot in all the other events, with Dent taking 2nd place across the board.

Youth A Girls

Amber King (Stirling BC) headed the time sheets in the time trial on her way to victory in the girls event. Other than getting boxed in and finishing 5th in the Elimination, King won the scratch and keirin, with a confident sprint in both events. Behimd the fight for the podium was between Stirling BC teammates Rhona Callendar, Jenny Holl and Ellie Park (Glasgow Riderz). In the end after swapping places in the events, the Stirling trio took a clean sweep of the podium

Youth B Boys

The top Youth B’s in Britain were present to lock horns once again, but this time on the track. Alfie George & Jamie Penny (Discovery JCC) hounding Jack Cruden (Glasgow Riderz) throughout. George took 4 wins, only missing out in the Keirin when trying to lead from the front, Cruden getting the nod. In the Elimination race Cruden had to settle for 3rd after getting boxed in by George with Penny having led out the sprint, by holding close to Penny’s shoulder George kept Cruden at bay, possibly not team work, but good use of using a team mate to help gain a result.

Youth B Girls

With only a blot in the Keirin (4th) Abby Stewart (Glasgow Riderz) took control of the B Girls with 4 wins out of the five events. The diminutive Anna Shackley (Glasgow Riderz) took victoy in the Keirin and with two 2nds and two 3rds took the second step on the podium.

Youth C Boys

Callum Reid (Rock & Road Cycles) dominated the Youth C event, but the results don’t show how hard he had to work to see of the challenge of newcomer to the sport Rory Theil (Discovery JCC), the two having several close finishes.

Youth C Girls

Imani Periera Jones (Glasgow Riderz) was head and shoulders above her competitiors, as well as giving the boys a run for their money in the combined events. Periera Jones taking a clean sweep of five victories.

Youth D

As is usual with Caird Park and the Youth D’s, there were a couple of first timers to competition. Jake Speed (Stirling BC) took the top slot from Oliver Kelly (Johnstone Wheelers), with Una Morrice (Glasgow Riderz) third.

With this event marking the start of the Discovery Junior’s 10th Anniversary, the club presented club founder Martin Harris and John Bremner with a “Coach of the Decade” trophy to mark their work and dedication to the club.
