O’er the Crow ‘n’ Doon
Location: Fintry, Stirlingshire
Event: 1 July 2012
Report: Snowdon Sports
Dropped going up the final climb, Scott McCrossan (Rock To Roll Cycles) battled his way back on the four-mile descent to the finish to land his first win of the season in the 55-mile O’er the Crow ‘n’ Doon road race in Stirlingshire.
The 19-year-old, whose early season was wrecked by illness, looked to be struggling second time up the three and a half-mile Crow Road climb, in the Campsie Hills, as he dropped back from a four-man front group.
But with the leaders looking around at each other, McCrossan regained contact as mountain biker Greg Brown (Dooleys Cycles) took the initiative into a strong headwind on the technical downhill run and, with the group now up to seven, was able to take a breather before unleashing his winning sprint.
“I took up the sprint with 250 metres to go and timed it perfectly,” said McCrossan, from Lanark, who pushed brown into second place with Jason Roberts (Glasgow wheelers) in third.
“It’s quite a hard circuit, and it’s good to get a win after what I’ve had this season. I’ve had glandular fever and an infection, and then I punctured on the last climb at the British Universities championship.
“I’ve retained my elite licence with this win and I’m starting to get good form again, so I’ll see how well I can do over the rest of the season now.”
