East Kilbride has just taken a massive step forward in youth development by applying for Go-ride status. The club has always been keen to promote and support youth activities but with the recent surge in interest in the sport the club has realised the importance of becoming part the Go-Ride family.

Guto William the Club Chairman says “We have been working hard this year gaining coaching qualifications and the experience to get to this point.”

“Go-Ride helps clubs increase youth membership and acts as a beacon to show that clubs provide a supportive environment for young members. Clubs must already meet certain standards before they can join, but along the way they continually work towards improving themselves and achieving best practice.”

Even more exciting news for the club came inform of £5000 grant from “Awards for All” – the National Lottery small grant scheme. The club will use the money for new bikes, Turbo trainers, rollers, waterproof kit and bike computers. The “Awards for All” funding will allow the club to fully embrace grass roots cycling in the East Kilbride area. With the right coaching, equipment and attitude in place the club is set to flourish.

Guto also has been proactive by working with Active schools coordinators to create links with local schools. Scottish Cycling aims to further support this process by working with South Lanarkshire Council to establish a cycling in school program which can directly feed to local Go –Ride clubs.
