Today we can reveal the full squad for the Para Cycling Road events and the long list for the Road events for this August’s 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, which get underway in just 23 days’ time.

Road

Anna Shackley, off the back of her excellent ride at the Giro Donne in Italy, will be looking to fight for Under-23 Road Race glory as she leads the contingent of Scots that will compete for the coveted rainbow bands in Glasgow this August. The route for the women’s road race, starting in Balloch, features many of the Milngavie native’s local roads – with a punchy course that could suit the climber.

It’s a similar story for Team DSM’s Sean Flynn who be looking to top off his first season as a WorldTour rider with a start in the Road Race. The men’s elite road race starts in his native Edinburgh before meandering its way through the Central Belt and entering a circuit around the centre of Glasgow.

Also on the long list is Dundee’s Mark Stewart, who has had an excellent season so far with the New Zealand-based UCI ProTeam Bolton Equities-Black Spoke with several top ten finishes in big races.

Callum Thornley stepped up to UCI ranks in 2023 after joining Trinity Racing, and several strong performances at the Volta a Portugal and in GB colours at the Orlen Nations Cup has meant that the Borders rider is on the long list for the both the U23 Road Race and Time Trial.

A final starting list will be drawn from the long list closer to each event, bearing in mind rider condition, impact of ongoing racing and injury. The elite men’s squad will be cut down to eight road riders and two time-trial specialists.

Para-Road

Dumfries and Galloway will host the majority of the Para-Cycling Road events, where Strathpeffer’s Fin Graham will take part in the Men’s C3 Road Race and Time Trial; he’ll be looking to defend the title he won in the Road Race in Canada last August.

Joining Graham will Paralympian and Commonwealth Games medallist Jenny Holl, who will be piloting Sophie Unwin in the Para-Road events in the South West. Holl won gold in the Time Trial in Canada with Unwin, before claiming a silver in the Road Race.

On the chance to compete on home roads next month, the Stirling rider told Scottish Cycling:

“The idea of riding a home Worlds is just unreal, and to have my friends and family come watch is just the dream. It’ll be so good for Sophie and me to defend our world title at home.

“It’s really useful to have been up and recceing the course, it’s just super helpful, it just gives us a bit of knowledge for what we’ve got coming in Dumfries!”
