Finn Mason made history at the British Junior Road Champs, as Scotland’s best endurance time trialists took on the National 50 mile TT Champs in Montrose.

British Junior Road Race Champs

Scotland’s Finn Mason (The Cycling Academy) made history on Sunday, as he became the first Scottish male rider to become British Junior Road Race Champion after an excellent win from the breakaway in Clitheroe.

Mason was in the breakaway with Sebastian Grindley (MAS Design) and Zach Machin (BCC RT) and the three gained over two minutes on the chasing bunch. Come the final lap the latter of the trio was dropped setting up a straight shootout between Mason and Grindley, with the Scotsman claiming the win in the sprint by a single hundredth of a second.

National 50 Mile TT Champs

Montrose was the venue for the Scottish National 50-mile Time Trial Championships on Sunday morning.

Very blustery conditions that Angus provided weren’t cohesive to fast times being set but it was a very close battle for who would take home the moniker of Elite Men’s National 50 Mile Time Trial Champion.

Stonehaven’s Lee Rosie (Wheelbase CabTech Castelli) has shown strong form both in bunch races and against the clock, with strong showings in the British Road Championships last weekend. His time of 1.47:47 for the 80km course would not be beaten, with Ray Wilson (GTR-Return to Life) coming home just 49 seconds behind in 1:48:36. Sam Glover of Elgin CC came home with the bronze medal.

In the senior female championship, Lorna Breetzke (Vanelli-Project GO) won out with a 2.08:49, a very respectable time given the conditions, with Alison Rodger winning silver with a 2:11.36. Margaret McMillan (Deeside Thistle) won the bronze medal.

Tyler Clare (Inverness CC) was the Junior Male national champion with his ride of 2.02:47, just under 40km/h in the challenging conditions, while Mark Walker (Deeside Thistle) won the Coffee Pot as the fastest rider representing a North East club.

Thanks to Kenny Anderson and the team at Deeside for organising, and the volunteers and officials for bracing the wind very early on a Sunday morning to ensure the event ran smoothly.

UCI World MTB Series

Vale di Sole was the venue for the latest round of the UCI World MTB Series, with Scots in action in both Cross Country and Downhill competitions.

In the U23 ranks, Elena McGorum turned in another strong ride to finish 40th in Italy, while in the Men’s Cameron Mason (Trinity Racing) and Rory McGuire finished in 45th and 48th respectively.

In Friday’s Short Track event, Crieff’s Charlie Aldridge (Cannondale FR) finished in 30th place in the Men’s Elite field.

Downhill
