Scotland's best BMX racers headed to Glasgow BMX centre last night for the #SCNatChamps. Despite the dreich conditions that the Knightswood track provided, Cumbernauld Centurions organised a great event with championships races from Ages 9-10 all the way up to Veterans.
The evening started off with the Moto races, which were held in the brief sunshine. In the Male 13-14, Lewis Cook (CUMB) claimed the gold medal from Lewis Collins-Nimmo (TITAN) in second, while David Skoruis (CUMB) finished with the bronze medal.
After a strong start, Harrison Bell (TITAN) won top honours in the Male 15-16 from Ben Fitzsimmons and his Centurions teammate Charlie MacPherson (CUMB). Tillie McCrum (TITAN) won the gold medal for the Female 15-16, but was beaten in the combined race by Alexis McCartney (CUMB), who won the Female 13-14 medal.
In the Men’s events, Scottish Cycling Performance Programme athlete Cameron Reid (Radio-Moore Large) led from the start gate to the flag as he won the 17-29 class event, beating Euan Drain (CUMB) into second. A strong ride from the Scot, who with the rest of the riders, spent the evening racing off the 4m start ramp, as opposed to the 8m that was used for the BMX World Cup last month.
It was Reid’s father, Raymond (CUMB) who won the Veteran’s class with Brett Archibald (TITAN) in second, and Fred Crowson (TITAN) finishing third.
Despite the conditions worsening during the short recess, it was time for the cruiser-class events. In the Male 13-14 Jay Taylor (CUMB) took the victory, beating many older riders in his combined final.
Despite losing out to Taylor, Fraser Watson won the 40-44 title beating out Scott Main (CUMB). While Brett Anderson (TITAN) improved on his earlier silver in the 50+ category with Fred Crowson (TITAN) in second. It was Levi Taylor (TITAN) claimed the gold medal in the Men’s 17-29 crusier category.
Scottish Cycling Young People’s Panel member Amelie Collins-Nimmo (TITAN) won gold in the Female 15-16, as the final races were ridden in what can only be called appalling conditions.
A massive thanks must be extended to Cumbernauld Centurions BMX Club, Western Titans BMX Racing Club, Scottish Regional BMX and all the officials and volunteers that made the event possible.
