Following the unfortunate postponement of the UK National Track Championships, which were to be held in Newport from 27-30th January, Scottish Cycling is putting on an alternative racing opportunity in Glasgow.
With the support of the Scottish track cycling community, we are coordinating a replacement event at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on the weekend of the 29-30th January. This event aims to offer an opportunity for riders who were targeting the National Track Championships as a key event towards Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games qualification, providing them with the chance to achieve a qualification standard with minimal disruption to their planned programme.
Whilst the Scottish Track Championships were unfortunately cancelled due to the Scottish government’s tightened COVID-19 restrictions, the UK National Track Championships will take place, but on the later dates of 3-6 March.
Full details, including a confirmed timetable, are still be finalised, but the events that will be held at the Emirates at the end of this month are:
- Individual Pursuit – Male and Female
- Team Pursuit – Male and Female (application required)
- Kilo – Male
- 500 – Female
- Sprint (Flying 200m) – Male and Female
- Team Sprint – Male and Female
- Standing Lap (application required)
Speaking of the opportunity, Scottish Cycling’s Head of Performance and Coaching, David Somerville, said:
“For us it is absolutely key to our Birmingham aspirations that we are able to provide this opportunity. Whilst it has been incredibly disappointing to see the ongoing pandemic disrupt both the Scottish and British championships, we want to do our utmost to put our athletes first, and ensure they have the opportunities they need to give them the best possible chance of Commonwealth Games qualification. I’d also like to extend a huge thank you to our track cycling community in Scotland who have rallied around us to put this event on, without any disruption to athletes’ training cycles.”
Entry will be open to Scottish riders who had entered one of the above events for the 2022 Scottish or UK National Track Championships. Riders who had entered the Scottish Track Championships will receive an invite automatically. Riders who entered the UK National Track Championships should email performance@scottishcycling.org.uk to request an invitation. Teams entering the Team Pursuit or Team Sprint are required to have at least one registered Scottish Team member.
Further detail will be confirmed in due course. Any queries should be directed to: performance@scottishcycling.org.uk
