This Volunteers Week, we are celebrating those in the cycling community who are continuing to do incredible things. Today, we ask Scottish Cycling Young People's Panel Member Erin Wood some questons about the importance of volunteering in cycling and what it means to her.

Who is your volunteering hero? And why?

For this question I honestly could not narrow it down to just one person, so I’ve had to pick two! I am part of Forres cycling club in the north of Scotland, and we have two main coaches, Peter, and Alan. From the day I started going to their sessions, I have had endless amounts of support from both. They without fail come to every session full of spirit and joy, and they also give up their weekends to help run events and to help encourage young cyclists to improve by taking us out on rides. Without them our club would not be the same, they really are the soul of the club.

Why are volunteers important in the sport of cycling?

Our volunteers are the base of our sport, without them most events would simply not go ahead, and we would not be able to have such a good sport. From volunteers who organise events, to marshals to just making tea and coffee for at the end of our races, our sport just wouldn’t be the same without each and every one working together to keep us safe and make sure we all have the best time!

What volunteering have you experienced during Covid-19?

Throughout lockdown I have been loving doing things with the Young People’s Panel to hopefully keep people entertained during these stressful and uncertain times. It has been great to see and support the people who are volunteering within the community. I am simply doing my part, by keeping to the rules and not putting myself or anyone else in danger.
