Scottish Cycling has been delighted to work with Glasgow University Cycling Club, Glasgow Riderz and University of Glasgow Sport to plan and deliver a new event in this years Cyclocross season ‘Cross at the Cube’.

Garscube Sports Complex, owned by the University of Glasgow was identified as the perfect venue to host a Cyclocross event – and a range of partners came together to make this happen. This demonstrated the benefits of clubs working together, with the University of Glasgow Sport Development team, to provide new cycling opportunities.

A ‘Come and Try’ beginners coaching session was led by coaches from both Glasgow Riderz and Glasgow University CC. Over 50 participants attended, rotating around four stations focusing on some of the key skills required within Cyclocross: off-camber riding, hurdles, cornering and race starts. A huge range of riders participated: from first-timers to those who had raced other disiciplines before – all united by their desire to give Cyclocross a go. The event also provided the opportunity for a 30 minute race, to put the skills gained into practice and get a taster of Cyclocross racing.

Glasgow University CC were determined to ensure that the event was attractive for students – by offering reduced entry fees, and also providing access to Cyclocross bikes for those where equipment would be a barrier to their participation. This proved successful – with close to 20 students taking part on the day – many for the first time!

The event also included a full programme of races for youth riders, and a fully booked open race – with the new course proving a test for riders of all ages and abilities. David Lines took the win in the Open race for the Men, while Karly Miller took the win for the Women.

Jim Brewer, event organiser from Glasgow Riderz said about their involvement in the event: “Glasgow Riderz were keen to partner Cross at the Cube to help establish a local CX event for young racers to take part in. The feedback on Cross at the Cube has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly around the opportunities the location provides for CX racing. The Riderz are keen to continue to support this really excellent event.”

Gemma Penman, Club President of Glasgow University Cycling Club: “‘The support of the University of Glasgow Sport Development team has been a massive part of our club’s growth this year. Working alongside UofG sport, and collaborating with local youth club, Glasgow Riderz, has helped us to engage with the cycling community around Glasgow.

Cyclocross is a very accessible sport, which is great for students as this allows them to have a go at any level. Garscube is an accessible venue for Glasgow students, with many choosing to cycle to the venue on the day – removing the worry of transportation that can act as barrier to students participation in events. The support of the UofG Sport ground staff team at Garscube we wouldn’t be able to utilise this new venue. Through Cyclocross, the University Club has been able to engage both the Road and Mountain Bike sides of the club, bringing the club together. We look forward to working with UofG Sport and Glasgow Riderz again in the future to deliver future events and coaching activities at Garscube.

Scottish Cycling is committed to supporting the delivery of events for all, bringing together partners to bring ideas to life. Get in touch with our Events team today to find out more.
