2019 UCI Road World Championships

Yorkshire, England

From the 22nd-29th of September, Yorkshire was at the centre of the Road Cycling universe and Scotland’s riders did not disappoint for GBCT in the 2019 Road World Championships.

Starting off the week John Archibald set the standard with the rest of his team in the Team time trial mixed relay, coming away with a Bronze medal. Their time of 39 minutes 18.87 seconds saw them earn a lengthy spell in the leader's hot seat, with only the final two nations able to better that achievement.

John’s performance earned him a last minute place for GBCT in the Elite men’s time trial later in the week, impressing the nation whilst occupying the hot seat for a considerable amount of time before eventually finishing 14th, as the title was won by Australia’s Rohan Dennis for the second successive year.

Alfie George was the highest-place British finisher as the USA’s Quinn Simmons took victory in the Junior Men’s road race midway through the week of races.

Alfie said: "The conditions were epic, the course was absolutely crazy it was up down, up down. It was an absolute battle of attrition…It feels amazing [to finish 7th], obviously as a team it's not what we came for, but top ten in the world feels good."

Anna Shackley represented Scotland within GBCT in the Junior Women’s road race. After a tough race including several crashes in the bunch, Anna came out in 12th place and the second Brit to cross the finish line.

Stuart Balfour battled his way through the U23 Men’s road race before the weekend, an impressive total distance of 173km, Stuart placed a respectable 39th out of 113 who finished the race and joined the victory of GBCT Bronze medallist Thomas Pidcock in his celebrations.

Finishing off the week for Scotland, Toa Geoghegan Hart placed 26th in the Elite Men’s road race after punishing conditions on course. Due to the heavy overnight rain, organisers took the decision to shorten the route and increase the number of laps of the Harrogate circuit, meaning that the peloton missed the northern loop and instead completed nine laps of finishing circuit.
