Results: Final NOSCA Dirt Crit Series

Last Saturday, 1st of November, saw the return of a popular children’s mountain biking competition, The North of Scotland Cycling Association (NoSCA) Dirt Crit, to Aganach woods, Grantown On Spey.    On the day over 90 riders turned out in near perfect conditions for Round 6, a record number for the Series.

The Series, organised by Scottish Cycling, the national governing body for cycling in Scotland and local clubs and volunteers had already visited Nevis Range, Elgin, Abriachan and Golspie this summer before finishing off in Grantown.

Round 6 of the Series, in Grantown, was organised by local club the Wolfpax Riders, local Mountain Bike club based out of the Wolftrax mountain biking centre in Laggan.   Alongside the race, Jules Fincham of bikeschool Scotland organised a skills session to help up skill the riders and learn techniques.

Racing was extremely close as the overall Series titles were up for grabs.  Two young riders, Caragh Muir and Rachelle Amos from Aviemore battled it out to be crowned Series champion.  Caragh Muir, finished in 3rd position on the day which was enough to secure the Series title just ahead Rochelle Amos.  In the U6 boys, Aviemores’s Sandy Masson won on the day but Cohen Poole (Monster Bikes) took the Series title ahead of local rider Hamish MacIntosh. Charlie Henshall, West Highland Wheelers, put in a dominant performance across the Series to take the top spot ahead of local riders Creag Muir and Leo MacIntosh.

The U10 girls Series came down to the final event after Aimi Kenyon (Black Isle MTB Club) and Rowan Masterson (Ben Wyvis Cycle Club) were neck and neck after 5 events.  Aimi Kenyon won the race by 20 seconds which was enough to secure the Series trophy. The U10 boys category was also hotly contested with Highland Bikes rider Zander Millar Todd winning on the day to take the Series title ahead of Glenmore’s Charlie Ferguson.  Ben Wyvis Cycle Club competed well in the older categories with Fraser Grigor taking victory on the day to secure a clean sweep and the U12 Series title and Fin Graham winning to take the U16 title ahead of club mate Matthew Grigor.  Host club Wolfpax Riders also had a strong showing with Dylan Farquhar, Fraser Watt and Jamie & Lucy Edmondson making the podium in the U12 and U14 races.

Commenting on the Series, Donald Hall, Scottish Cycling’s Regional Development Officer said:  “The 2014 Series has really gone from strength to strength with an average of 56 children taking part in each event.  It is great to see so many youngsters taking part and enjoying cycling - be it for sport or fun – at Dirt Crit events and through their local clubs.  We finished off the Series in style with our biggest ever entry and a very well-run competition.   A massive thank you must go to the Wolfpax Riders and to all the volunteers, officials and riders that made it happen.  We look forward to planning the 2015 Series!”

Scottish Cycling would like to thank all of the volunteers and several local organisations for supporting the event in Grantown as well as all those that helped up put on the Series throughout the year.
