A Scottish co-op is changing the way people of all ages travel in the town of Bishopbriggs. ED’s Cycle Co-op has expanded its local sustainable travel project, Good Moves Bishopbriggs, thanks to £160,000 from the Scottish government’s Climate Challenge Fund.

It is creating three new jobs – a part-time project manager, a sustainable transport officer and a specialist bike doctor and workshop assistant – and lots of volunteering opportunities as it continues to promote cycling to children and adults.

Last year the co-operative trained every pre-school child in the town, which lies on the northern outskirts of Glasgow, to ride, preparing them to cycle to primary school. It reached 250 children and staff at nine nursery schools, and also provided family weekend cycle clubs, primary and secondary school projects, mass participation community rides with police escorts, women-only courses and a Fairtrade cycle festival.

The funding will now help it to connect cycling with other sustainable transport options, including walking, public transport, lift sharing and car clubs, and provide sports cycling, with support from Scottish Cycling, in the run up to the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games this July-August.
