SCOTTISH VOLUNTEER NAMED BRITISH CYCLING’S LOCAL CYCLING HERO

British Cycling has today announced the regional winner for Local Cycling Heroes, a campaign to recognise the sterling work done by grassroots volunteers across the UK. With over 1100  public votes cast, John McCracken from Kilmarnock has been Scotland’s Local Cycling Hero for his infallible dedication to inspire others to get the most out of their cycling.

Retired teacher John, whose self-proclaimed mission is ‘to keep the bicycle wheels of Ayrshire turning smoothly’, was one of our most nominated entrants. An enthusiastic but modest cycle leader, he has trained children and adults alike in bike riding skills, and led numerous cycle challenges, including taking a group of pupils and staff on an epic journey by bike from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

‘He still maintains his old school’s fleet of 30 bikes, recycles donated bikes so others can use them, and is currently training to be a trackside marshal at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow. ‘He has truly inspired me,’ said Maureen Hyslop, while Mary Morris adds: ‘Mr McCracken has made me more confident in myself, making me realise what I can achieve.’

Double World Champion Becky James pays tribute to our winner:

'Volunteers are essential to cycling in this country, without them we wouldn’t have a sport and we certainly wouldn’t have Olympic and World Champions.  I know how much volunteers have helped my career, so it's great to see so many people being recognised for giving up their time for cycling.'

John will be invited to a VIP experience at the World Track Championships in Manchester. If you’ve been inspired to get on your bike, find out what cycling opportunities are on your doorstep at goskyride.com.
