The 2013 Scottish junior road race championships took place in bright sunshine today in Kennoway with a 50 man field contesting a fierce race around east and north east fife on Sunday, 2nd June 2013.

The event promoted by Spokes racing team on behalf of Scottish cycling headed out to St Andrews, completing 3 gruelling laps around Strathkinness Kemback and Pitscottie before taking in Cupar and the huge and brutal cults hill then heading back to Kennoway and finishing at the top of Langside brae.

There were a few small breakaways early on with the strongest containing Callum Foster from Glenrothes and Scottish Junior team captain Aidan Quinn but they made no real impact. On the first of three small laps Sean Gordon (Thompson Cycles) punctured and couldn't regain contact with the race abandoning on lap 2. On lap 2 Lewis Grieve from Leven (Spokes RT) also punctured but with a swift wheel change and some good team work managed to regain his position at the front of the race. Lap three was quite uneventful and a group of around 40 riders headed through Cupar.

As they reached the climb of cults hill where the race would spark into action pre-race favourite Mark Stewart (team Asl 360) went straight to the front and stretched the race out. As the elastic snapped the only riders to keep contact with him were his teammate Gavin Shuttleworth and Jamie Henderson (spokes RT). The trio began to build a good lead. Behind them the steepness of the climb was beginning to take its toll as the remaining group of 40 began to disintegrate and 2 small chasing groups formed but even after these 2 groups came together with 4 miles to go they couldn't close on the 3 leaders.   At the finish Mark Stewart took the championship honours with his 3rd win in 2 weeks.   Jamie Henderson took 2nd in the race and the first senior prize and Shuttleworth 3rd (and Silver medal in the Juniors race).

The chasing group which contained the 3 local favourites Tom Arnstein (ASL360) Callum Foster (Leslie Bikes) and Lewis Grieve (Spokes RT) began to brake up on the rise up Langside brae with Struan Mcinnes (TeamRST) taking 4th place (and bronze medal in the Juniors race), Arnstein close behind in 5th.

Organiser Craig Grieve said at the finish “this was a massive team effort to produce a first class event and the Scottish Cycling representatives on the day have already requested we repeat it next year. I would like to thank the whole team for their commitment on the day and I look forward to improving on it for next year"

We caught up with the new Junior Road Race Championship to firstly congratulate him and to find out how things went for him on the day. Mark said It was a strange race as there was no significant breakaway, riders would go up the road get 30 seconds to a minute and then get brought back.   I guessed the race would stayed together because when a junior was in a break the other juniors chased hard.  I decided to attack up one of the smaller hills and when I turned round most of the juniors were on the front chasing!  So I waited till the big climb which was massive and 10 miles from the finish.   I am sure most of the other juniors had the same idea, you could sense the atmosphere change as all the juniors crept towards the front of the bunch with the big climb approaching! With a small break still lingering up the rode I made my move, I knew that it was not going to be easy so I pushed on for most the climb near the top there were 3 of us;  Gavin Shuttleworth (ASL360), Jamie Henderson(Spokes RT) and myself -  with Tom Arnstien(ASL360) yo-yoing of the back. We rode strongly together for the last few miles knowing that the winner was going to come from this trio.  As we came onto the final climb I attacked and was able to make a gap of a few hundred metres till the finish I stayed ahead by a small amount but was well aware of Jamie Henderson and Gavin Shuttleworth closing in fast.  Jamie had attacked Gavin and was gaining on me quickly but luckily for me he ran out of rode!  I was delighted to win and become the Scottish Junior Road Race Champion.”

Thanks to Craig Grieve and the team of Spokes RT for making this possible.

Next weekend (9th June) Scottish Juniors including our Junior Champion, Mark Stewart, Gavin Shuttleworth, Tom Arnstein, Hamish Carrick, Cameron Balfour, Sean Noon (Team ASL360), Fraser Martin & Hector Lancaster (Perth United), Zak Loney (Ythan CC), Lewis Gieve (Spokes RT) and Struan McIness (RST)  travel to Cumbria to take part in the British junior road championships.

With the Scotland having so many Juniors on good form at present, we are hoping they will bring home some medals.  However it turns out though, you can be sure that they’ll give it everything and do themselves and Scotland proud.
