Article: Sir Chris Hoy to attend the Edinburgh Sky Ride

British Cycling, Scottish Cycling and Sky, in partnership with City of Edinburgh Council, are proud to announce that Sir Chris Hoy - Great Britain's most successful Olympian and 6-time gold medallist - will attend Sky Ride Edinburgh on Saturday 8th September 2012.

The free cycling event will take place in his home town of Edinburgh for the first time, offering people of all ages and abilities the chance to ride through the city on traffic-free streets, taking in some of the city’s most popular attractions.

Sky Ride Edinburgh, which will also be attended by Sky Ride celebrity ambassador Edith Bowman, is the 14th City Event of Sky Ride 2012. The national campaign aims to get one million people cycling regularly by 2013. The campaign includes free events, activities, information and support to help and inspire everyone to get cycling.

Sir Chris Hoy said: "I'm really looking forward to coming to Edinburgh and supporting my hometown’s first Sky Ride City event. For the last four years I’ve been proud to support Sky Ride which gives people the inspiration to get out on their bike and the unique opportunity to enjoy cycling with family and friends on traffic-free streets.  It’s been a great summer for cycling and I can’t wait to see everyone motivated by Team GB’s success come together to enjoy a fantastic event - I hope to see you there!”

Sky Ride Edinburgh’s 10km route will take in some of the city’s most iconic landmarks and sights including the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood Palace and Arthur’s Seat. The route will be traffic-free from 9:30am to 3:30pm allowing participants to take part in the ride at their own pace. With no official start point or start time, cyclists can ride as much or as little of the route as they want.

Craig Burn, Scottish Cycling's Chief Executive also said: "Last year, over 200,000 people took part in Sky Ride events across the UK and it’s great that there is now a SkyRide City event taking place in Edinburgh on Saturday 8th September. The Sky Ride city events give participants the opportunity to get out on their bike on traffic-free roads, it’s completely free and suited to riders of all ages and abilities. So why not give it a go?”

Sky Ride Edinburgh is just one of the many ways local residents can get back on their bikes through the Sky Ride campaign. Sky Ride Local rides are free, local led-rides running every Sunday through the summer in and around Edinburgh.
