Oxford-based racer Jozef Metelka (Beeline Cycles) took a solo victory in the Spirit Bikes Road Race, staged on the Cranfield circuit in Bedfordshire on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was 18 seconds ahead of his nearest rival at the end of the 90-mile race, run off over eight laps of a large circuit, followed by four laps of a smaller finishing circuit.

After several early breaks had come to nothing, Metelka went away with another rider, and kept the pace sufficiently high to eventually drop him as they headed for the finishing circuit.

Metelka was caught by the bunch, but quickly attacked again with around 16 miles remaining, and held an 18 second gap over runner-up Martin Ford, the 39-year-old Herbalife rider from Newcastle in Staffordshire, while a second further back was 21-year-old Jacob Tipper (Biketreks) in third.

The supporting race was won by veteran James Stewart, the 53-year-old from near Bedford who led Bonito Squadra to a one-two with 21-year-old team-mate William Scott taking second.

The pair had broken away with around ten miles left, and had a lead of around 25 seconds on the line from third-placed Riko Sibbe of London Dynamo).
