Report: Castle Combe Summer Series - Week 5 of 15

Event: 2nd June 2011
Promoted by: Chippenham Wheelers
Venue: Castle Combe Motor Racing Circuit, Wiltshire
Report: Andy Cook
Event Details

With it being half term there were a large number of extra youth riders particularly in the U16 race with Matt Godden outsprinting his team mate Adam Beddall from Matt Woods. Katie Metalli was 1st U16 girl. Ashley Hutchison beat Peter Kibble and Taylor Rowe to win the Under 14 race with Nicole Pollock being 1st girl in that category. Over three laps of the main circuit the U12's race was once again dominated by the Tillet family with James getting the better of Sam with Will Crofts again coming in third having suffered with his gears in the event. Emily managed to finish 4th in the event ensuring that she was 1st girl. Lance Hutchison matched his older brother by winning the U10's event from Euan Taylor and Lauren Booth. Maindy Flyers Bevan Smith stopped Scott Curtis's run of wins in the U8's race with Ayrton Smith coming in 3rd. Oriel Powell took 1st girl in this category.

The sunny weather attracted a large field of 79 riders for the 3/4ths race which set off just in front of the E/1/2 race. Due to demand from riders the format for the Castle Combe series has changed from a handicap event where the original intention was to provide a good training race for the E/1/2 riders and at the same time provide an opportunity for the 3rds and 4ths to pick up points if they could work together. The lack of major open events means that these evening races are now as keenly contested by the E/1/2's desperate for points and also as keenly contested by the 3rds and 4ths anxious to progress through the ranking system hence the change in format due to rider demand to separate races.

This is not without its problems when the two races inevitably come together as they did this week. Despite warnings on the start line and a complete understanding of the frustration felt by riders by the organisers / commisaires a few riders managed to gain an advantage when the groups merged. A break had formed from the front of the E/1/2 group that went through the 3rd's & 4th's. A few of the 3rds and 4ths jumped in and used the advantage gained from riding with the E/1/2's to get clear of their bunch. Once told to separate the 3rd's & 4ths bunch then used the E/1/2 bunch to get towed back up to the break in their event. For the future we will start the E/1/2 first in order that they can establish their race and make sure that anyone being overtaken the onus will be on the overtaken group to drop back and not interfere with the racing in front. That can work both ways as often the E/1/2's may not race either. Riders not obeying the instructions of the officials will be DQ'd.

The 3rd's/4th's race was won in fine style by youngster Dan Marshall from Nick Mawson and Ben Preston. Dan led out from a long way and held off everyone in the mass sprint for the line. In the E/1/2 race a break established of 9 riders that split up in the windy conditions towards the end of the race leading to a win by Jason Flooks from Richard Mardle who by my reckoning should be leading the series overall. Ben Stockdale then outsprinted Grant Bayton another long time supporter of the series.
