Report: A A Brown Engineering Ltd Road Race

Event: Saturday 28th May 2011
Promoted by: Welland Valley CC
Event HQ: Tur Langton, Leicestershire
Report: Dean Barnett

On a bright blustery day Jason Meyer - Stourbridge Velo won a tight 3 rider sprint to win the AA Brown Engineering Ltd Road Race near Tur Langton, Leicestershire. 60 riders made their way out of the village and onto the course to face 13 laps of a rolling 4.6kilometer circuit.

As the Union Jack was waved to signal the start of the race the first lap was run at good pace. The final kilometre of each lap was into a stiff side to head wind. On lap two Meyer made a dig of the front to see what interest there was in the pack. Tom Sexton from the promoting club was working hard pulling on the front of the bunch, Meyer was soon back in the pack.

The first prime after 3 laps was taken by the energetic Meyer. Ross Baillie - Leicestershire RC, was another rider mixing with the leading riders and at the mid race point was part of trio that included Meyer and Sexton. The quality trio only had a handful of seconds over a depleting pack and were soon reeled back in.

The race settled down with more and more riders getting shelled out of the back as the windy conditions and short sharp circuit was taking its toll. The second prime with 5 laps to go was taken by Ben Jeeves - wwcyclingbargins.com as he held off a challenge from VC Lincoln rider Ben Green.

With 3 laps to go the elastic finally snapped as Meyer, Baillie, Mike Curtis - Aire Valley Rt, Lee Plant - PSUK and Oliver Nuthall - Nottingham Clarion moved clear. The five riders worked well as unit, intent on building a lead over the pack. Their lead hovered at 25 seconds as Mick Davie - Pedal Power and Robert Slater - Derby Mercury attempted to close the gap. As the leading group took the bell their lead was still under 30 seconds over the bunch.

A good crowd at the finish line looked down the finishing straight and the final sprint for the line exploded as the riders started the climb with 400m to go. Curtis, Meyer and Baillie moved clear from Nuthall and Plant, with 150m to go the road slightly kicks upwards and at the same time Meyer moved off Baillies wheel to hit the front. Both Plant and Baillie pushed Meyer all the way to the line as the Stourbridge Velo rider secured a fine victory.

Julian Rathbone was the first Welland Valley CC rider finishing in 11th place but had the consolation of wining the promoting clubs A A Brown Trophy. Hans van Nierop was 19th and Tom Sexton 27th.

The battle for the Lantern Rouge was for the last rider on the same lap as the leaders. This honour went to the oldest competitor in the race Vic Barnett - WVCC who fought a titanic battle with Sam Crabtree - WVCC over the last lap. Only 31 riders completed the distance

The event was extremely well supported by members and friends of Welland Valley Cycling Club.
On behalf of the club and competitors, the organiser, Dean Barnett, would like to thank British Cycling, NEG, Leicestershire Police and the races sponsor AA Brown Engineering Ltd.
