Report: Castle Combe Summer Series - Week 4

Event: 26th May 2011
Promoted by: Chippenham Wheelers
Venue: Castle Combe Motor Racing Circuit, Wiltshire
Report: Andy Cook

With rain on and off throughout most of the day leading up to the evening's racing, combined with the televised Crit in Aberystwyth, along with racing taking place at Ilton, fewer numbers were expected at Castle Combe for week 4 of the summer series. Nonetheless for the riders that did compete, racing was as keenly contested as usual. The wind that had been playing havoc with other races on the same evening was pretty fierce and led to some gutsy performances across all categories taking part this evening. In the youth races the usual protagonists were again well to the fore mopping up points.

The reduced numbers of seniors affected the E/1/2 race more than the 3/4ths race which meant that the 3/4ths actually pulled away from the E/1/2's and although the E/1/2's were coming back at the end of the evening it made the commissiares and judges' job much easier. A number of 3/4ths have commented how good the racing was, which may have been due in part to a number of ex international's, Elite and 1st category riders helping to enliven proceedings. A fine late attack into the wind up the home straight led to a good win by Rob Lyne of Giant CC - Halo Films in the 3/4ths event. In the E/1/2's race Josh Papworth managed to hold off a fast finishing Nick Pilborough and Simon Snowden who had been particularly active throughout the race trying hard to get clear on a number of occasions unsuccessfully. 114 riders signed on whereas for the first three weeks there were 165+ riders signing on, reflecting the tough conditions.
