Stage 2 Tour of Britain

Sunday 13 September, Darlington to Newcastle Gateshead 153.3kms/95.3miles

Sole Survivor Reus Takes Victory in Gateshead

Rabobank's Kai Reus won the gruelling second stage of the 2009 Tour of Britain, crossing the line alone after a long stint away from the peloton with Thomas De Gendt and AG2R's Tanel Kangert. The stage saw attacks more or less from the off, before the key move stuck on the KOM climb at Langley. From then on in it was a will-they-won't-they cliffhanger, with Reus the sole survivor on the coastal run-in to Gateshead. De Gendt looked in with a shout for stage victory after mopping up in the points and KOM stakes, but lost Reus' wheel at 15km to go. In the end, TT specialist Reus dug deep and did enough to stave off the attentions of a baying peloton.

The sprint for second place won by Kristoff from triple stage winner in 2008, Edvald Boasson Hagen

How the stage unfolded

The race got underway just after 10:30 and the pace was high from the off, with lots of riders trying to jump away in the opening throes of the stage, notably local hero Chris Newton, along with Freddie Bichot (Agritubel) and Nicholas Roche (AG2R). However, their attack was shortlived and was reeled in after two miles.

A few minutes later, another group of 6 riders got away with Roche once more involved. But again, they couldn't break the elastic and were swallowed up. Roche had obviously eaten his three Shredded Wheat and attacked again, but the peloton clearly saw the Irish champ as a danger man and quickly upped the ante, reeling the rampant Irishman and his cohort back in.

Team Barloworld led the peloton into Durham, chasing down Agritubel's Lequarte, who had escaped earlier, catching him on the first KOM climb at Aykley Heads, which was taken by Rapha Condor's Tom Southam.

Tanel Kangert (AG2R), who'd been involved in an earlier move was once more attacking with Thomas De Gendt (Topsport Vlaanderen) and Kai Reus (Rabobank) for company. Kangert took maximum points on the KOM climb at Langley, followed by Reus and De Gendt, who stretched their advantage to 2 minutes. Even without the 20-20 of hindsight, it was clear that we had a stage-defining move on our hands.

Simon Richardson is on the attack less than a kilometre into the race. It kicked off one of the most enthralling hours of racing as there was attack after attack after attack and the British riders were right in the mix.

De Gendt took top points at the day's first intermediate sprint at Harelaw and the trio kept on motoring, extending their lead to around 5 minutes as they approached the day's final KOM, the 3rd Category climb of High Barns. De Gendt was hell bent on adding to his jersey collection, taking the final KOM points ahead of Reus and Kangert, the gap stretching to almost 6 minutes.

As the race looped around the north of Newcastle, Barloworld got organised and sent Mauricio Soler and Chris Froome to the head of the field to try and reel in the triumvirate out front. Meanwhile, up the road, the second sprint of the day was taken by Reus, not content with the talented young De Gendt taking all the spoils. However, the chase was on in earnest, and as the race flashed through the crowds in sunny Morpeth, the gap was down to 3 minutes, with Garmin working hard, perhaps trying to set up Sutton for a second stage win in Newcastle Gateshead.

With big hitters like Garmin and Barloworld stringing out the peloton in full-on chase mode, the gap plummeted to 1m 30 as the riders reached Bedlington. The timegap continued to drop, but De Gendt clearly didn't want to just roll over and accept the inevitable and wound up the pace once more. However, the injection of pace proved too much for Kangert, who sat up and was quickly consumed by the chasing group.

Incredibly, De Gendt and Reus managed to increase the gap once more to around 2 minutes. Perhaps the peloton had slackened off as Gendt had upped his game? The race hit the coast and headed toward the wonderfully named Sluice and the final sprint of the day, which was taken by De Gendt, further cementing his grip on the Sprint and KOM jerseys. At 20km to go, the gap hovered at 2 minutes.

Then at around 15km to go, De Gendt lost Reus' wheel navigating a roundabout. De Gendt tried to respond to but had little left in the tank and slipped back, perhaps consoled by the knowledge that he had two jerseys in the bag as reward for his day's effort. The young Flandrian was quickly caught by the peloton and rudely spat out the back, while his partner in crime Reus churned away up front on his own.

At 4km to go, Reus was being reeled in at an alarming rate of knots, setting the stage for a thriller on the streets of Gateshead. However, Reus had enough left in the tank to keep away and claimed a richly deserved victory.

Kai Reus who was involved in an accident two years ago and despite being in a coma, has recovered and showed great guts and talent to win on his own today after a long break.

Post Race Reactions

Kai Reus: “It was really hard. I had been with the three guys after 40ks from the start and then we rode. At 30ks from the finish, we had a minute and a half and we knew the peloton was coming, then the gap went up to two minutes and then I was riding for the win. I lost Thomas deGendt 15k from the finish and rode the rest on my own. Yes, there was wind but the finish line was not flat. The last 10k were really hard for me and maybe for peloton also. It was a tailwind.”

When some one said you must have gone really fast to hold off the bunch, Kai had everyone laughing when he said “yes, I am destroyed, so thank you but I am totally f#@?d now.”

“This is my victory in two years since …” at which point tears were starting to flow with Kai as he remembered the bad times two years when he almost lost his life. He was laughing along with the rest of us though when asked would he defend the yellow jersey if he wasn’t too f…. “We shall see. I think stages six and seven are really hard. I felt good today but now my legs are sore.” Kai then explained that being a time trial specialist, helped him in his lone effort to win today.”

Thomas De Gendt: He started by saying he too, like Kai, was a bit, well, tired to put it nicely after being on the attack for two days. “”I think I am going to stay in the peloton tomorrow! My legs are now very tired. The team leader  said I had to stay still today but I saw some one attack so I thought one time I jump with him and they let us go. It was not intended  but it turned out well.”

Leader of two classifications, De Gendt, with jerseys for Mountains and Sprints.

“Maybe I can keep the KOM jersey two or three days longer, or maybe until the end. I am going to try. Yesterday, I got a good massage and sleep early so I had enough time to recover. I was surprised they let us go because the team of the King of the mountains, Vacansoleil, they would not let me ride so it was big surprise but maybe they too were also tired.”

“The race was hardest on the first mountain because there were seven guys in front and Columbia tried to close the gap and it was very hard but may be that is our luck that everybody was tired afterwards and they us go easier. I wanted to go to the finish with Kai also but I lost three metres on a corner and I couldn’t close so it was story finished.”

Russell Downing: Asked to compare the race to Ireland, which he won, he says “it was quick yesterday, really quick. The stages are shorter so you can relax and really wind it up for the last hour and half where as Ireland was constantly quick for the 200k in most stages. Having an extra in the team there lets teams control things better whereas like the sprint on stage 1, it was a bit of a free for all. If it’s going to be like that every day, it's going to be good fun! The run in today was pretty tricky but at least it was drier.”

Rapha Condor's Day on Stage 2

The Rapha Condor team started the stage brightly but ultimately the day brought frustration for the team overall as a number of riders lost a handful of seconds on the twisty run in to the finish at Newcastle Gateshead. Kristian House was the best placed rider in the team rolling in on the coat tails of the sprinters and he is now the teams leading rider on GC.  Click here to read the report
