Cycling, unlike other sports, provides us with a unique opportunity. Whilst amateur footballers dream of scoring the winner at Wembley and village cricket teams can only spectate at Lords, cyclists have the ability to recreate Geraint Thomas’ Alpe d’Huez heroics or follow in Eddy Merckx’s footsteps up Ventoux.

The access we have to Europe’s greatest climbs and rides is often something we take for granted. In 2019, using the Tour, Giro and Vuelta as inspiration, tick some of Europe’s famous destinations off your cycling checklist.

The Col du Tourmalet - Stage 14 of the 2019 Tour de France

The Tourmalet is one of the most prestigious and memorable climbs in Tour de France history. As the most frequently visited pass since the Tour’s introduction in 1910, you will be riding over 100 years of cycling history should you choose to conquer the Tourmalet in 2019. We suggest taking on the climb before the pros arrive, ensuring that, come the 20th July, you can join us in pointing at the screen announcing ‘we’ve been there!’

Lake Como - Stage 15 of the 2019 Giro d’Italia

On Sunday 26th May, the Giro peloton will ride from Ivrea to Lake Como, a mammoth 237km. Como, the Stage 15 finish, is one of our favourite places to cycle in Italy. The pristine lake is the ideal backdrop for a road cycling holiday. From here, our favourite ride involves cycling East to the equally impressive Lake Garda where more unforgettable views await. Taste the wine, try the food and immerse yourself in the rich Italian culture as you explore Lombardy.

Andorra - Stage 9 of the Vuelta a España

Andorra’s climbs may not have the history and reputation of those in the French and Spanish Pyrenees but they should not be ignored. During Stage 9 of 2019Vuelta a España, riders will enter the small principality and come up against some of the most challenging mountains featured during the 21 days.

Roads are quiet, views are spectacular and climbs are challenging. Tick off the Coll de d’Ordino and the Coll de Gallina this year and discover the hidden gem of Andorra.
