What kind of riding do you do?
Sportives, racing

What do you enjoy most about cycling?
I enjoy the ability my bike brings me to pursue objective personal goals within a popular social fitness-driven environment. Whatever the prevailing weather or, say, the severity of the surrounding terrain, a target can easily be set and, with the appropriate degree of work, actively achieved. It may be a new PR that shaves two seconds off a previous best or a marginal increase in sustained power output is seen during a structured turbo session. The setting and reaching of realistic goals has had, and continues to have, such a positive knock-on effect on the various other important elements of my life, namely family and work, that I recommend it to most people I meet.

What’s your favourite ride?
Early morning, mid-July, riding out of Bourg D’Oisans in any direction! The choice of climbs (Alpe d’Huez, Glandon, Croix de Fer, Lauteret into Galibier, etc.) makes this my favourite place to ride and, therefore, any ride leaving from there is my favourite ride.

What’s your top cycling tip to share?
I once read that those coming to cycling later in life can experience, with a reasonable level of effort, five years of ongoing improvement.  I have experienced this dramatic enhancement in my cycling performance and general fitness.  I believe this phenomenon offers a unique opportunity for personal satisfaction and development when others are simply opting out and accepting general decline and deterioration.  It doesn’t matter where you start, you can and will reach a decent level of competence if you put the time in.

If you had a tandem, who would you like to ride it with?
Thomas Voeckler. A rider that is small in stature but wears his big heart on his sleeve, showing such grit and determination it is truly awe inspiring. We could also pull some great faces together as we drag the tandem up the mountain!
