BARTON WHEELERS INVITE YOU TO JOIN THEIR 80th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

2013 sees the 80th anniversary of the Barton Wheelers Cycling Club and it will be celebrated in the town on Saturday 20th July  from 10am to 4pm with an exhibition of vintage and modern day bicycles and photographs from the club's history at Barton's Waters’ Edge Visitors Centre. Club members also invite you to join them on a commemorative cycle ride in the countryside surrounding Barton uponHumber.

The Club was founded in July 1933 after a group of cyclists led by Herbert Dent and Dave Farmer went to a rally at Torksey and found that they had to be members of a club in order to enter the sports. With quick wits, they used the name Barton Wheelers for the weekend and held an inaugural meeting on their return to Barton.

The club and its members have been involved in all forms of cycle sport over the last 80 years and the club still boasts a strong membership and annual programme of events. Club activities centre on the Thursday night Time Trial series that runs from April to the end of August, with riders pitting themselves against the clock over distances ranging from 5 to 25 miles. The club also promotes an open time trial and road races which attract large fields of racing cyclists from far and wide.

The Barton Wheelers pride themselves on being an open and friendly club that welcomes anyone who shares an interest in cycling to join in with their activities, and so they are inviting cyclists of all abilities to join them on Saturday 20th July on a ride to commemorate the club’s long history. Three routes have been chosen in the countryside surrounding Barton covering 10, 25 or 50 Miles, the latter being the "80km Anniversary Challenge". The rides will leave from the Waters’ Edge Visitors Centre at 11:00 and will be led by members of the club and conducted at a leisurely "touring" pace. There is no charge to join the rides and refreshment vouchers will be provided for all participants at the end of the ride. The rides will be on open roads and so riders joining us do so at their own risk. More information about the club and this celebration can be found on the club's website; http://www.bartonwheelers.co.uk/
