Wightlink-Island Renewables IOW Road Race

Road , Freshwater – Sunday, 19 May 2024

Event Summary

Event Overview

Regional A road race for CAT 2/3/4 Men on a sporting 90km (approx) course around the scenic roads of West Wight, taking in some of the iconic roads on the Island. The course, comprised of 3 x 27km laps of a circuit, will start from the HQ at West Wight Sports & Community Centre, passing through the villages of Brook, Brighstone and Chale with a final 8km loop which will finish at the top of the first ascent at Freshwater Bay.

The race roll out will be neutralised from the HQ car park entrance onto Brookside Road, turning right onto School Green Road A3055. At the mini-roundabout the convoy will take the 2nd exit onto Stroud Road. The convoy will continue along Stroud Road, leading into Victoria Road and then turn left onto Gate Lane which leads onto the Military Road A3055. At a point deemed safe to do so, the Commissaire will drop the flag and the racing will commence along the Military Road after the descent to Compton Bay. Race enters the circuit, starting the first of the 3 laps.

The race then continues along the Military Road and riders can contest the sprint at Chine Lane (there will be a white flag approximately 300m before the sprint and a green sprint board at the line).

The race then turns left at Chale Church onto Church Place. The road winds through Chale until reaching Chale Green. At this point the race turns left onto Town Lane and drags up to Emmett Hill. After the ascent, the race turns left and continues over a series of rolling hills until a fast descent into Shorwell where extreme care is needed when turning left at the small roundabout opposite The Crown Inn. The race continues along Walkers Lane, through Brighstone Village – again, extreme caution is needed due to parked cars and pedestrians.

The race then ascends Hunnyhill where riders can contest the KOM (there will be a blue flag at the bottom of the hill to indicate the start of the climb and a polka dot KOM board at the line). There is then another fast descent to the junction of Brook Village Road to complete the first lap (there will be a further 2 laps).

At the end of the 3rd lap, riders bear right at the junction with Brook Village Road and will be directed to ascend Brook Shute to start the finishing loop. There is then a fast gradual descent down until the junction at Middle Road. The race turns left and continues to the junction with Afton Road where there is another left turn. The race winds along Afton Road in the final 1km until the Military Road junction at Freshwater Bay. There is then the final sharp left turn, followed by a steep climb to the top of the final summit of the race before the 'false flat' to the finish line.
